The Iron Giant – A point of reference in the history of animation

In late 1996, Brad Bird, an American director, screenwriter, animator, producer and occasional voice actor, using Ted Hughes book published in 1968, “The Iron Giant”, as a starting point, pitched his ideas to the famous entertainment company Warner Bros. At that time, Bird was working for Tuner Feature Animation, a multimedia company that merged with Warner Bros. after being purchased in 1996 by Time Warner, Warner Bros parent company. It appears that Bird’s pitch was based around the idea “What if a gun had a soul?”. Upon the merge of the two companies, Bird became the director of the soon to be feature film.
