Origins and Excellence – History of Air Defense Artillery War has generated tremendous leaps in technology, including weapon systems capable of destroying entire cities. The most intimidating and threatening force that man has utilized against one another is aerial threats, including aircraft, missiles, and nuclear bombs. In order to protect our very existence man had to create a defensive system that could deter, engage, and evolve with these emerging threats. Thus, Air Defense Artillery (ADA) was born. From its early beginnings in coastal artillery, Air Defense Artillery has continuously evolved and adapted to play a crucial role in the success of several campaigns including World War II. Prior to the War of 1812 the United States had anticipated war with both France and Britain due to political and economic tensions. With the anticipation of an upcoming conflict the United States realized the war would be naval heavy with technological advances in shipbuilding and mass production. One of the most significant uses was in the fall of 1944 when AAA had over a 90% success rate in engaging Germany’s V-1 bombs en route to Antwerp, Belgium. Antwerp, Belgium was a vital asset utilized as a logistics hub for supplies coming in and out of the European continent. Losing this port would have been detrimental to allied forces potentially turning the tide of the entire war. Antwerp’s protection entailed a multi-layered defense design that showcased allied forces AAA combined power.
