History: A Short Story

History is an amazing thing, for those who are alive to experience it, or at least watch it

on the news. You get to tell your grandchildren about it and they will probably feign interest as

they run off to play with their new electronic entertainment 7000 device. I will always remember

where I was when a piece of american history took place, little more than a decade ago, my

parents took me Disney World, a place where nothing ever goes wrong and everyone is always

happy. The first couple days we were there, were mostly my parents trying to keep up with two

toddlers desperately trying to make it to the next nap time. After two days of this, on a sunday

morning, my baby brother and I, who isn’t much of a baby anymore at 6’3”, were

My parents were in a unique, near

comatose state, which only comes from having children, in the other room. We were having fun,

simply playing, not a care in the world,

Sometime later we flip to the next channel and we both see something that we perceived

as so cool that we had to tell our parents. Just then my mother was waking up and started

preparing for today’s strenuous high stakes game of “are you tired yet?” I walk up to her and

utter the phrase that I will never forget, “mommy, airplane go boom.” My mother of course

thought I was watching some sort of cartoon and walked over to the TV just to see what the fuss

is about, and upon finding out that it was tuned to 9news her face stopped looking as jovial and

quickly turned to panic, as she thought about the million questions that went through everyone’s

head that day. She then thought of her husband, my father was in the military so he had an

obligation to protect the country and everyone in it. Would he have to go fight in a new war? Is

the war coming here? If he leaves will I ever see him again? She went to wake him up and he

went through the exact same stages she went through not thirty seconds earlier. After the

Then as a soon as he got it, it ended, he seemed to breathe a sigh of relief, or at least a slight

decrease in stress, and returned to us.

Attraction after attraction after character interaction after attraction again, I couldn’t help

but notice the atmosphere of something wrong. Everyone there was stressed, each cast member

seemed to have drawn a smile onto their face just to take care of the guests, the only people who

managed to successfully hide their expression, were those in full body costumes. Parents and

children alike wanted to give Mickey a hug as a form of reassurance, so that they could feel that

everything was going to be alright. Hours went by, when the owners decided to close the

park for only the second time in the resort’s history. We were ushered out of the park and before

long, it was empty. We went back to our hotel room, it would have been commonplace for

my dad to plop down on the hotel bed and fall asleep for a couple hours, but instead he watched

the news for any information on the then developing story. Dinner as usual, then bath,

When I was eight years old, my family went on a vacation to Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Being the extravagant woman that she is, my grandmother spared no expense; we stayed in a Disney hotel with a jungle theme and went to the water parks and restaurants. However, the prospect of going to Cinderella's Castle made me most euphoric. I had always loved Disney and had traveled to Disney World once before, but I was too young to truly remember the trip. The world around me was new and exciting, and Cinderella's Castle embodied all of the magic of Walt Disney World.…

American History: Our Hope for the Future Imagine waking up everyday not having to worry about terrorism or a shooting crisis, or any other attack. In the past we never had to worry about that, and now it’s an everyday thing we have to worry about . My parents have told me that when they were younger they never had to worry about anything like terrorism or people shooting people for no reason, or massacres. Our military helps us and our country go through these things every single time we need them to. Right now we have some ups and downs in the armed forces and we should feel like if we keep trying that in the future we can work to fix it.…

Since before I was born, my mother has had glaucoma and uveitis in both of her eyes. Glaucoma causes increased eye pressure while uveitis causes inflammation and eventually lead to vision decline. Although she had this serious condition, I was never affected because she never acted like she had a disability. Her insistence of everyday tasks were her ways of assuring herself that there were still aspects in her life that she could control since she was in a situation that she could not change.…
