To begin our journey through the Bible, we are going to learn a fundamental truth of Christianity. Does anyone know what fundamental means? A foundation holds up the rest of a building, so a fundamental truth is a truth that holds up a building of values and beliefs. The fundamental truth we are learning today comes from an event that happened a long time ago to the nation Israel. Has anyone heard of Israel? It is a country in the Middle East that lies just north of Egypt and south of Europe. The people who live there are called Jews, or Israelites, and they have a special holiday: the Passover. Today, we will read the history behind the Passover.
Several thousand years ago, a man named Israel lived in Canaan. God had promised to give this man and his children the land, and today we know it as the nation Israel. However, back in those days, the

Does anyone know what a famine is? A famine is a time when no food will grow. Israel and his family could not find food, so they left their home and went down to Egypt. For four hundred years, they lived and grew in Egypt until the family had grown so big there were enough people to make a whole nation! When the king of Egypt, called Pharaoh, realized how God was blessing and making larger the people of Israel, he became afraid of them. So, he decided to enslave the Israelites.
Does anyone know what a slave is? A slave is someone who is forced to work without pay. Is slavery a good or bad thing? Slavery is wrong because it robs a person of the freedom to decide how to live his own life.
The king Pharaoh forced the Israelites to build cities, but that was not the worse thing he did to them. The gave the order to kill all their sons! Pharaoh, afraid of the Israelites, wanted to make sure there were no strong men who could fight against him. This was terribly wrong. The Israelites had no hope. What do you think they di?
