Over years, the hazardous air quality caused mainly by China 's industrialization and economy growth, has created many problems for the population 's health and environment. The country of China is the third largest behind Russia and Canada and with the large population and big country, as many as 80% of the population lives in the countryside and earn a few thousand Yuan a month (Haw 201, 219). To an outsider, China would seem like a poor country, but things in china are relatively cheap. China is the most populated country with 1.357 billion people as of 2013 (data.worldbank.org). Due to the large population growth causing an overpopulation, in 1972, China invoked a one-child policy that has prevented an estimated 400 million births (Kerr 150). With China now more steady, since 1940, China 's life expectancy has risen by 32 years (Kerr 150). The decline in youth versus the amount of elderly caused some worry but with a more stable population, China started improving. China has changed adequately in the 20th century and it is still changing with a broad past to look back on. China has a vast population of distinct cultures each with their own history. With the changes in China the country is evolving through history into a modern power. Napoleon Bonaparte once said, "Let China sleep, for when she awakes, she will shake the world." (Kerr 13).
