For this forum I will select my city law enforcement agency which is the New Orleans Police Department or better known as the N.O.P.D.. The history of the N.O.P.D. Dates back all the way to the 1790 's and even though during that time the agency had a different name (Guard Deville or City Watch) it was created by the Spanish Colonial Governor Baron de Carondelet due to the high crime level, and to help the military fight against crime (Sinclair). The N.O.P.D. Started very small by 1817 it only had 4 dozen of patrol officers, by 1852 it had a chief, commanding officers, and more than 300 policemen, by 1915 it had 520 policemen and they started to use motor patrol wagons, motorcycles, and horse patrol wagons, by 1922 it was the only department …show more content…
The N.O.P.D. Accomplish its mission by creating a community policing environment, not centralizing the police from the community, and accepting that the police is the community and the community is the police (Ortmeir, p. 144). Tactical Platoon 1 & 2: These two units are the N.O.P.D. 's S.W.A.T. Teams (City of New Orleans).
Bomb Disposal Unit: They are in charge of identifying and the safety disposal of IEDs (City of New Orleans).
Armory Unit: They are in charge of safekeeping all weapons and provide training for the N.O.P.D. (City of New Orleans).
Search and Rescue/ Marine Unit: They are in charge of maintaining the fleet of the N.O.P.D. Boats and conduct search and recovery operations in water (City of New Orleans).
Extradition Unit: They transport fugitives to other jurisdictions (City of New Orleans).
K-9 Unit: Their main job are narcotics and explosives detection by using dogs (City of New Orleans).
Traffic Fatality Unit: They do investigations of deadly motor vehicle accidents (City of New Orleans).
DWI: They apprehend DWI suspects, and perform the proper tests to charge them with DWI (City of New Orleans). The requirements to Join the N.O.P.D. Are (City of New Orleans):
Be at least 20 years
