History 101 Course Analysis

As someone with a major largely based on science, I have found myself sometimes wondering why it is important to take a history course in college. However, as my time in History 101 comes to an end I have come to understand how beneficial it is. This course helps to remind us where everything once started and how far it has come. It teaches what worked and did not work for society so we may learn what to do to make the present and future more prosperous. It also teaches us about religions we are unfamiliar with. In Michael Edmondson’s document “Why Study History”, he uses George Santayana’s quote “[t]hose who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat It.”(47), it is important to analyze the past to learn not to repeat tragic events that did occur. Edmondson also quotes Marcus Tullius Cicero, “[h]istory is the witness that testifies to the passing of time; it illuminates reality, vitalizes memory, provides guidance in daily life, and brings us tiding of antiquity.” (47). Without being taught world history nations would have no information from past experiences to help society grow. A lack of understanding the past only creates a lack of understanding of the future. To comprehend the past history must be understood on a religious basis also. Many discoveries throughout history were shaped by religion. Most important values in society have religious backgrounds dating back thousands of years. Understanding different religious helps us to understand different regions culture. Once you can understand a region’s culture you begin to recognize how and why their sociality functions the way it does.
