Albert Sidney Johnston attacked unsuspecting Union soldiers at ground near the log church Shiloh Meeting House at Pittsburg Landing on the Tennessee River under cover of surrounding forest. Federals refused to surrender and Rebels soon became disorganized; by afternoon, Union soldiers had definitively and heroically established a battle line at the sunken road, known as the “Hornet’s Nest.” Rebel attacks were unsuccessful until massed artillery helped Confederates gain the upper hand as they surrounded Union…

Frederick Douglass perhaps traversed the most difficult of roads when comparing his story to that of the other two writers, Alexie and Malcom X. Douglass was a slave who, at first, was treated with gentleness and kindness by the wife of Master Hughes. He describes the mistress as “a kind and tender-hearted woman; and in the simplicity of her soul she commenced, when I first went to live with her, to treat me as she supposed one human being ought to treat another.” (Douglass 118) When her husband realized she was treating young Frederick with such thoughtfulness, even teaching him the alphabet, he immediately instructed her to cease her ways and to toughen up. He even suggested there was danger in educating a slave.…

After reading the Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass, an American Slave, I learned a lot about the determination of man and the further horrors of slavery. Douglass was born as a slave and lived the first half of his life as one till he escaped. He didn’t have him mother growing up and he never knew who his father really was either. There was word it was his first owner and that he was a white man but that was the extent of Fredrick’s knowledge of the man. The moment he was old enough he’d be sold and witness horrors slavery forced upon him before being sent off to Boston to live with the Auld’s where he’d learn his ABC’s and soon enough start to teach himself how to read and write.…

Growing up slavery was simple, it was blacks only, or at least that’s how it was pictured and taught in American schools. For the most part, that is true, but only to a certain extent, leaving out vital occurrences that are monumental in today’s society. What if the perception you have on slavery or what you thought you knew about it, was in fact only half of what took place? In “The Hidden Origins of Slavery,” by Ronald Takaki, shows us the ‘forgotten’ side of slavery in the 1600’s. He does this by exposing the truth behind slavery, explaining to us the similarities both black and white slaves encountered.…
