The idea that people of different walks of life all have different perspectives on decisions based on life experiences speaks true to the period of 1914-1929 as the ways that British males attempted to include other members of society doesn’t seem to include everyone else. In the period between the beginning of the First World War and the beginning of the Great Depression, only white males of British descent enjoyed all the rights and privileges of being a member of society, while those who did not fit this category were excluded fro¬m society.

This made the lives of the few people who were able to immigrate to Canada very difficult. Within this broad group of immigrants, let’s focus on Asian immigrants, specifically Chinese immigrants as they played a significant role in Canadian history in the period of 1914-1929. There were many examples of how immigrants of Chinese descent were excluded from society in this time period. One way that they were excluded and relegated to a dark sector of society was the Chinese head tax. Up until 1923, the Chinese head tax was being enforced and meant that Chinese immigrants would be paying $500 per person to immigrate to Canada. The Chinese head Tax was an attempt by the Canadian government to regulate the number of Chinese immigrants migrating to Canada, but to no avail. This dissatisfaction of having Chinese immigrants continuing to come to Canada later helped create the Chinese Immigration Act, now more commonly known as the Chinese Exclusion act due to its repulsive nature. It is a law that was passed in 1923 to prohibit the entry of Chinese immigrants, with very few exceptions. This meant that it was virtually impossible for people of Chinese descent to immigrate to Canada. You can now understand their rhetoric acts of hate towards everyone but themselves and how it shaped the way Canada is today. The government knows they can never heal those wounds and those long lasting scars, but I want you to think about why the British males made these decisions to exclude everyone else from being a member of society. Keep this in mind and be more conscious of the rights that we have today and appreciate them as people before us have fought long and hard for you to have them
