Homer, author of The Odyssey, tells a lengthy epic of Odysseus. He is the protagonist of the tale, told to be one of the most heroic Greek heroes. Homer spares nothing while writing one of the most well known Greek stories, making sure Odysseus is portrayed as the amazing hero. The heroic attributes of Odysseus is described implicitly and explicitly. Some examples of how he’s been described as heroic is by his intelligence.…
Much like Katniss Everdeen of Suzanne Collins’s acclaimed novel, The Hunger Games, Theseus, a well known Greek hero, offered to be one of the tributes of a situation that could potentially end his life. In his case, Theseus voyaged on a quest to the Labyrinth to slay the Minotaur and free the other tributes. All four heroes in Edith Hamilton’s Mythology show traits and features that display their unworthiness to named a hero. Nevertheless, these heroes also exhibit extremely admirable qualities. However, one of them deserves full respect to be titled a hero.…
Throughout the story Odysseus does not take actions when his men are being killed or eaten so that he can live, like he did in the giant’s cave, when Scylla attacked and when Zeus struck them with a lightning bolt and the evidence that proves Odysseus takes these actions to protect himself reads, “why not/ take these cheeses, get them stowed, come back, / throw open all pens, and make a run for it? / We’ll drive the kids and lambs aboard. We say/ put out again on the good salt water! / Ah, / how sounds that…
The topic of this essay will be on my opinion of Odysseus being a hero. Odysseus certainly did have some heroic moments in the Odyssey from the story of the Cyclops to the fight against the suitors and their families. Odysseus is a really courageous man, he always put his life on the line during these situations and got through hard and horrific conditions. There were times in the story that I thought Odysseus couldn’t make it but he came through and prospered to the next journey.…
"The Odyssey" is an epic poem that centers around Odysseus, an epic war hero lost at sea after the Trojan war. Odysseus faces many trials & tribulations while he tries to find his way back home. He is faced with many challenges, but he overcomes them as any other epic hero. Odysseus rightfully deserves the label of epic hero because he has superhuman strength and intelligence, he travels and goes on a journey, and he has a major flaw.…
Many people know about Greek mythology and its epic stories about gods and heroes. A well-known character in one of the stories is Odysseus, the main character in the book “The Odyssey”. Many people debate if Odysseus is a hero or just a selfish king that only looks out for himself. The people that claim he is not a hero overlook many of his skills and heroic achievements. I believe Odysseus is a hero and will explain why.…
Would you think someone who constantly keep you in the dark and puts you in danger all the time is a hero? A hero is someone who is always looking out for others and is not prideful. Odysseus is the opposite of this, he is not a hero. Odysseus seems to have a lot of pride for himself and sometimes seem to speak or take action before he thinks. For example as Odysseus and his men are fleeing from the cyclops he yells, “ Cyclops if ever mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye; Laertes’ son, whose home’s on Ithaca.”…
At first glance it may appear that Herodotus’ account of Egypt is a clear-cut description of the country and what he learned there, intended to educate a Greek audience. However, a closer examination reveals that his intentions and motivations may have been different that originally assumed. The opening passage exemplifies the sort of conflicted view of the Egyptians that the author so frequently presents. Though, at times, he emphasizes their otherness, he seems to admire their achievements and credits them with inventing multiple cultural practices that the Greeks then copied. He begins with high praise for the Egypt, calling it a country of wonders, unparalleled in their quantity or majesty (2.35).…
Titus Livius and The Early History of Rome Roman history is subjective to those who study it and write about the rise and the fall of the Roman Empire. One ancient historian named Titus Livius, who was born in either 59 B.C. or 64 B.C. , had written a series of books titled History of Rome. Not much is known about Titus Livius in his younger years except that he had lived in the city of Padua, which had suffered greatly in Rome’s Civil War. His books are split into several different decades of Rome’s rich history. The first series he wrote in History of Rome are broken down in five separate book(s) titled: “Rome under the Kings”, “The Beginning of the Republic”, “The Patricians at Bay”, “War and Politics”, and lastly “The Capture of Rome”.…
In The Odyssey, Odysseus has been separated from his family due to the Trojan War, and wishes to return. His son, now a grown man, is ruling his land and trying to stop suitors from marrying his mother and gaining power of the kingdom. “First by far to see her was Prince Telemachus, sitting among the suitors, heart obsessed with grief..” (Homer., Fagles, and Knox 81). Throughout the story, Odysseus encounters many situations. The last, and most famous, situation he was in was when he went in disguise into his own home, where his mother was going to marry whoever could shoot Odysseus’ old bow and arrow through 12 axes.…
Oedipus finds out from Creon who is his brother in law that he sent to Delphi for information, that Apollo was the God who put the plague the Thebes until they “Drives the corruption frame the land, don’t harbor it any longer, past all cure, don’t nurse it in your soil-root it out!”-( Oedipus The King pg:576, line: 107-111)Oedipus says this as an oath before the chorus and the priest that the murder would be found and banished from the land. During this is one of the time you can really feel Oedipus anger rising. Oedipus decline from his status is not really an accident but a fate he could not really prevent. This is why I believe Oedipus deserved sympathy.…
As Herodotus is known to be the progenitor of “Orientalism,” to which Munson elucidates the interlocking Herodotean components, operating in his theory of ethnicity. Availing the The Bacchae by Euripides, Said argues in his spilt thesis that: “The two aspects of the Orient that set it off from the West in this pair of plays will remain essential motifs of European imaginative geography. A line is drawn between two continents. Europe is powerful and articulate; Asia is defeated and distant,” and, “[s]econdly, there is the motif of the Orient as insinuating danger. Rationality is undermined by Eastern excesses, those mysteriously attractive opposites to what seem to be normal values” (57).…
The Heroes of Olympus is a series of novels that are a sequel to the Olympians and Percy Jackson series of novels by American author Rick Riordan. The series of novels is a combination of fantasy and mythological elements that make for some of the most entertaining mish mash of narratives. The novels are made up of narratives that describe the conflict between Roman and Greek demigods and the earth goddess, Gaea. The novels have a lot of Roma mythological elements in addition to several characters not found in the previous series.…
Though there are many works from ancient Greece that survived, there are two authors that are the most well-known or frequently taught. Homer’s two epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, are perhaps the most well-known, because of the heroes epic battles of strength and wit against those deemed as enemies. Hesiod’s Works and Days, however, may be the most pertinent to finding out how everyday citizens of ancient Greece went about their everyday lives. These epics detail the lives of both extraordinary and ordinary men’s lives in ancient Greece. When compared to one another, Homer’s heroic world and Hesiod’s more common world have many similarities, such as views towards religion and right and wrong, and a significant difference, the role of women.…
