At first, it was about the rhythm, but it was never just about the rhythm. Music didn’t captivate me because of the power it had to make my body move, beginning with the tapping of my foot and ending with the opening up of my vocal cords. In fact, it was about my mother and the joy I saw on her face as she listened to traditional Peruvian creole music in a restaurant. On October 31, 2016, the night of Halloween, my little brother was predictably complaining because we were celebrating Peruvian Creole Music Day instead of “trick or treating”. Though I knew he did not feel it as I did at his young age, his complaining reminds me of the internal conflict known to me as “being stuck between two cultures”.…

In the world of the ancient Maya there were many sacred days, most often associated with celestial events. But none perhaps more widely celebrated than the Spring and Fall Equinox at the ancient site of Chichén Itza in central Yucatan. Each year thousands of pilgrims and curiosity seekers flock to the nearly six square miles of national park ruins to watch a phenomena that was carefully mapped by ancient architects and astronomers. On the day of both the vernal equinox and the autumnal equinox and several days leading up to and after the events afternoon sunlight bathes the western balustrade of the El Castillo pyramid's main stairway causing seven isosceles triangles to form and create a shadow that imitates the body of a 120 foot long rattlesnake…

Mexican Culture Introduction Culture is regarded as a set of shared norms such as convictions, values, and desires by a specific part of a populace that makes them unique to the other sections of the population (Hardison). According to a Mexican scholar Carlos Fuentes, the Mexican culture is considered one of the most intricate cultures in North America. Most people consider this culture to be a one of deep religion and high social disorder ridden with a contradiction over the spiritual and the material. All in all, this culture remains a paradox as it 's characterized by deep Catholic ties, savagely brutal criminal groups, humble poverty ridden farmers, and a sensuality of the Mexican culture (Mente). This chapter seeks to utilize various…
