Hispanic Culture: Verbal And Nonverbal Communication

Decent Essays
I agree with you that every culture has a unique quality, especially with nonverbal communication. I recently took care of a Hispanic patient and one of the family members explain more about some of their cultural interactions and the proper way to communicate with the patient. This conversation made me realize that we do not think about our own behaviors or mindful of the differences in the ways other cultures interact. In the Hispanic culture, eye contact is considered rude and disrespectful. Verbal and nonverbal communication is learned behavior and difficulties arises when individuals do not communicate in a way that is prescribed by the culture (Giger & Davidhizar, 2013). I identify myself with Latino/Hispanic cultural group. The most important characteristics of my culture are: the language, the festivities, food, the relationship with our elders, the way we spend time at work, and the public transportation among others. For example, I speak Spanish as my primary language, but I learned English since I live in this city. We, celebrate many festivities, Carnival, is a festivity in which we thank the earth for all resources it gives us, and we like to decorate the houses with balloons, flowers, paper decorations, and also we throw alcohol to the corners to stop the bad luck. In my culture we don’t eat tortillas, but we cook the most delicious “humintas,” a kind of “tamal” made of fresh ground corn, mixed with…

The Hispanic population will develop much faster then any other ethnicity group in the United States, and Hispanic shoppers will speak to an expanding rate of the American buyer base. I am very interested in the Hispanic cultural. I have put a lot into getting to know this culture by visiting the Niagara cafe and talking to my friend Hugo who I have interviewed for this paper. He identifies as Mexican American, and is “hispanish and Latino” he says. This means he is ethnically and racially part of the Hispanic Community. “Only about 25 percent of Hispanic Americans use Hispanic or Latino to describe themselves” (page 217).…

Communication is a key aspect to our survival on this planet. If we didn’t communicate, we wouldn’t be able to do much in any aspects of our lives. We use verbal communication to actually say what we mean, but we also use nonverbal communication. That is like body language, facial expression, gestures and eye contact. When someone is talking to you, you should make sure you are analyzing all of these and also listening to what they are saying.…

Families exist in a larger complex made up of a community of kinship network and friends that make up their beliefs and values practices that are defined within the family (lynch 43). These beliefs and values are based on culture, which is comprised of the different languages spoken, as behaviors that influence each individual’s way of thinking, feeling, and interacting (28). The two cultures I decided to observe was that of the Hispanic/Latino and African American, each culture offers many differences in terms of values, communication, and religious beliefs. Hindus and Muslims own many of the shops in the area I live in so going out to buy vegetables or go to get your eyebrows done is an opportunity to have an encounter with different cultures. During these encounters, it is common to hear people from other cultures interact and greet others in their respective language. The frequent encounters encourage people from other culture to want to be able to greet each other in each other’s language. There are other social interactions such as when Muslims have their annual festival at a local park and anyone from different cultures are invited to attend and…

We interpret showing respect in social interactions as a cultural value, so we enforce that belief by practicing certain behaviors as a cultural norm (Conley 90). As members of the American society, we engage in social interactions with other members by systematically facing each other and making eye contact. I was interested to observe what would happen if this formulated interaction was changed. In order to breach this cultural norm and be an informal deviant, I conducted a study by engaging in conversations with participants while facing the other direction with my back turned toward them. I continued our conversations normally, acted like nothing was wrong, and noted the reactions of the…

Nowadays, the most common forms of communication are electronically based; whether its text messages from our smart phones, an email sent to our computers, voicemails, and etc. But since it’s more convenient, are we really getting the full message? Albert Mehrabian in 1971 published a book titled, Silent Messages, in which he stated that communication is 80% to 90% nonverbal or through body language, meaning that only a small percentage is based on the actual spoken word. Basically, 55% is based on body language, 38% on the tone and how we say the words, and leaving the remainder 7% on the actual words. Many people have taken this as a fact now, so why is it more important on how we convey the message and what we are physically doing when presenting…
