A Japan Times poll shows that 64% of Japanese people hope that Obama does not apologize. In a related poll, 80% of the hibakusha, survivors of the Hiroshima atomic blast in August of 1945, are not looking for an apology from President Obama. The President will spend a few brief moments touring Hiroshima, and he will move on to the next stop of his Asia tour.

Sixty years ago, 85% supported the bombs being dropped. That may not come as a surprise. But, did you know 23% of Americans at the time were sorry that the Japanese people had given up so quickly? The reason?
Those Americans wanted to drop more atomic bombs on Japan (NPR). Truly, it would appear that, "Time heals all wounds," or, at least, makes them hurt a little less.
Opinions about Hiroshima are changing among Americans. Recently, seventy-three percent of voters older than 55 approved of the decision, and only 50% of voters ages 18 to 34 approved (Quinnipiac University). I am happy about that change in attitude among American voters. There is hope for a brighter future in our country and our world.
I love America. And, I live in Japan. I am a married father with a daughter. She has one foot in two wonderful countries.
