During the concluding stages of World War 2, on August 6, 8:15 am, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The bomb was dropped by a B-29 bomber, known as ‘Enola Gay’. The bomb was released by parachute and exploded at around 590 metres above the city. About 45,000 people were killed instantly and the final death toll was about 70,000 people because of the radiation precipitated by the explosion.
