The Islamic State is considered a “jihadi-salafi” group. They have an extremely literalist interpretation of the Quran, so they use violent methods to correct the division that has occurred among Muslims. They believe that the only way to solve the issues they are confronting is by going back to the practices of the Early Islam and making strict interpretation of the Quran and the words of the Prophet Muhammad (Johnsen 2016:16). It is under this reasoning that ISIS is bringing back the horrors that go back to the Early Islam that even emulate those practices also used in Medieval times. Some of this practices include kidnapping, which often conclude in appalling displays of executions that end up in social media after ransom are not paid. Other threats against humanity also include their support on slavery, especially the one involving women and their raping. Their destruction of cultural heritage is also a great concern considering how ISIS is set on wrecking everything that they consider to be against the true Islam (Johnsen 2016:22).
