Hipster Fashion Research

/Have you ever heard of the hipster fashion? If not, let me enlighten you. The hipster fashion is responsible for the huge beards, young men are supporting at the moment. You know the ones, you can see them entering the room before the person wearing them does.

2/Now, I’m not saying that I am against beards per-say, but why, oh why, do they have to be so long. I mean what happened to the designer stubble? At least, the designer stubble could be washed whilst washing the face. Whereas, these beasts need a bathroom all of their own! You don’t need me to tell you, how dirty they could become if not washed and groomed properly. There you go, it already sound’s like someone’s pet.

3/It’s as if men are trying to outdo each other in some sort

I mean beards’ in public. Ugh, I think I got it, at last, I have a scapegoat. Yes, that’s it, its David Beckhams fault, brilliant! Then again, it’s not little kids following their football and fashion icon. No, these are young men in their 20s and 30s how do they get away with it, at work, in interviews. The mind boggles.

5/ On reflection, maybe these beard’s are a way for men to show their masculinity to the world. Open any magazine and you won’t see a hairy chest anywhere; least of all, a hairy six pack. No, they have had it all waxed off. Furthermore, some men have had the back, sack and crack waxed as well. Let’s just pray the eyebrows are safe because if not, it would not be a good look, especially with the beard.

6/Anyway, enough of me asking you to make sense of it for me. After all, you could be sitting there with a great big one hanging down your knees... a beard that is! Or you could be a female who thinks your man looks dead good with half his face covered up. If so, you are in the minority. According to a survey conducted by, Lynk, 86% of males think men look more masculine with a beard; whereas, 88% of women think men look better without it; however, a whopping 95% of women think the big beard is a total turn off. Therefore, I can only conclude that men are not growing big beards to attract

It is a common (and one would consider normal) sight in most American preschools or day cares, a little girl will be playing with her baby doll, rocking it and crooning lullabies, while a few feet away from her a little boy is waging an epic battle with his toy solider. The concept of nature versus nurture is a question that has plagued sociologists and psychologists for centuries, what causes a person to act a particular way? Sex influences how society expects a person to behave and think, in accordance to what gender role the person is expected to fulfill. These social expectations permeate into every aspect of a person’s life, from what color a baby is to be enshrouded in (pink for a girl or blue for a boy) when they are born to how an adult is expected to respond to an obstacle or conflict. Brands like Degree and Secret have become adept at identifying and…

Time and time again has the act of murder been identified either as a justified reason, or classified as senseless, cold, and unreasonable killing by the masses. The act of killing is not justified. In the story of “Just Lather, That’s all”, the protagonist of the story, the barber is faced with a, rather menacing decision that will affect his life forever. As a rebel, the barber is given the mission of assassinating the enemy of their cause: Captain Torres.…

The reason why men and women do this is to keep a perfect appearance for society. In modern day this still happens as men will go to the barber shop to get a clean haircut and women are going to salons for their haircut and manicures. These actions are done because of American society begging people to keep a clean look and a good appearance (Carter 2015). Although, in American society there is still a debate about weight and beauty and Miner perfectly describes the debate. Miner states that in the American culture people are forcing fat people to be skinny and skinny people to be fatter.…

Miss Brill vs ‘The Man’ A first impression is said to be one of the most important moments in a relationship, yet it is most often based on little knowledge of who the person truly is. Likewise, premature judgement is made in both “Identities” by W. D. Valgardson, and “Miss Brill” by Katherine Mansfield. Miss Brill is faced with prejudice as she is alone in the “Jardins Publiques” whereas the protagonist from identities is shot to death because of his ‘false identity.’ One's self-perception differs from reality and often one only learns this reality through the collective perceptions of the world with which we interact.…

In 2010, Old Spice launched a series of humorous commercials featuring Isaiah Mustafa as “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like.” They are incredibly effectual commercials, albeit strange. Portrayed in them are grandiose and lavish lifestyles featuring costly belongings ranging from gondolas to horses to yachts. The commercials were an overnight success and quickly became a cultural phenomenon, generating significant word-of-mouth buzz online and offline. In its commercial, Old Spice effectively convinces its viewers of the urgency surrounding their new product by appealing to their own underlying desires, affecting their decision making without being cognitively recognized. The narrator achieves this by specifying the foundations of attractiveness,…

With new fashion trends coming out and the way models portray themselves in the media also is another factor in this. The mass media are probably the most powerful conveyor of beauty ideals, promoting an unrealistic image of female beauty that is impossible for the majority of females to achieve (Rollero 195).With this being said the media can dictate what type of expectation should be held, weather it being the newest fad diet. Gay and straight men alike are shelling out significant sums of money for gym memberships, styling products, salon haircuts, manicures, and waxing treatments (Derenne 259). With women and men spending their money on all these products they wish to meet this standard to fit in with the crowd. Many pay attention on being in the crowd rather than being themselves.…

Issues of Representation, Identity and Difference 21/10/15 In class today, we grouped ourselves and answered questions in relation to issues of representation of a particular image/advertisement. This advertisement shows a black man, cleanly shaven and well dressed and holding an empty supposed ‘head’, with the catch phrase “Re-civilize Yourself”. Essentially, the advertisement was implying that the empty hair, having long scruffy hair and a beard in comparison to the shaven model was ‘uncivilized’, and using the advertised products would help the targeted audience (men) ‘civilize’ them.…

As you may have noticed, even though "Shaving" is a short in terms of words story, it is a story that encompasses a big symbol with many other symbols around it. When you read the text at first, you may not notice all these, but after a deep analysis, the shaving part in the story really comes clearer in our mind and the meaning the author wanted to give to this part of the story comes obvious. The shaving part in the story is clearly the most interesting part of the story in terms of symbols because its hole process encompasses many part that are, in a symbolic way, linked to the main theme of the story. Hair has a strong influence not only on a woman’s confidence in herself, but it also determines the amount of power a woman has and the amount of power that society gives her. How a woman is perceived is indeed determined by her appearance. We can also determine a woman’s background and sometimes her religious practice based on how she wears her hair. In the Sikh religion, women have to keep their hair unshorn. Wearing this turban was an external identity feature that helped categorize these women.…
