The hippies went against all mainstream views in order to open up society. Although most Americans disapproved of these social and economic changes and the hippies suffered serious harassment and even death, they did not suffer for nothing. Yes, some things take some time to change and we might not be able to change others, but there are many things the hippies helped to change. Religious and cultural differences have gained greater acceptance. In 1971, discrimination against females in educational institutions was banned, in 1973 women were given the right to abortion and now they are seen more equal to men than ever before. They are not dependent on men, they are allowed the same jobs as men, some women are the main or sole breadwinners in their families and more importantly they have the same rights as men.
