Hipparchus Views On Astronomy And Rotation

Decent Essays
Earth rotates on it's axis, however relative to the rotation earth is not standing straight up. Precession is essentially the opposite of when a spinning top falls over. On a small scale, as a top slows down and gravity takes effect it begins to tip over. Precession has the opposite effect on earth, as gravity from the sun and moon pull earth to a more upright position (still relative to the rotation). Because the common points of interest in the sky are located using earthly clues, as the rotating axis changes the location of these points also changes when viewed from earth. As far as I understand it doesn't happen very quickly, with one cycle taking 26,000 years. This is why Hipparchus noticed a difference not between his own observations, but between his observation and those recorded much earlier. …show more content…
One of the my biggest nightmares is coming true with the widespread ignoring of science in the ongoing climate change debate. On that note, I do think it is everyones duty to be aware of, or at the very least, not to ignore proven and accepted scientific

In the Living on Earth radio segment the host interviews Chris Mooney, the author of the book Unscientific America: How Scientific Illiteracy Threatens our Future. The host and Mooney discuses a 2009 Pew Research center poll that found that most Americans don’t believe humans have induced climate change. Mooney argues in the interview — and in his book— that there is a growing gap between scientists and the public. He argues that sciences has been politicalized in recent year, and he mentions another Pew Poll that found that Republicans— even well educated Republicans are less likely to admit Climate Change is human induced. Additionally, Democrats in the past have also been critical of certain medical vaccinations, thus he finds that both…

In our Solar System, the planets and the Sun sit inside a flat plane, called the plane of the ecliptic. This ecliptic is also the path taken by the Sun across the sky over the course of the year. There are twelve constellations lining the ecliptic. We know these constellations from our zodiac and the Sun passes through each of these constellations annually. Over time, this annual cycle of the Sun actually appears to move backwards every seventy-two years.…

After reading and discussing “Learning to Die in the Anthropocene” I was left class thinking about it a lot. I really enjoyed the reading, but sort of left with the feeling that it was useless. While it clearly did not offer any practical solutions for climate change, I believe it offered an insight that can be incredibly powerful. Science can tell us climate change is a problem and that x, y, and z will happen if we do not stop doing what we are doing. For the most part, we know this.…

“Quantifying the consensus on anthropogenic global warming in the scientific literature” Pp. 1-6 This article features a study that attempts to quantify human effect on global warming and how much we are truly causing. The paper also talks about the need for awareness of global warming to increase worldwide in order for global climate reform efforts to be made. The paper talks about how many false reports on climate change are published, and that knowing the difference between a legitimate and a fake study is important. In the end the paper supports campaigns that contribute to shrinking the consensus gap to help find a general understanding among legitimate scientists.…

Seasons result from the yearly orbit of the Earth around the Sun and the tilt of the Earth's rotational axis relative to the plane of the orbit. 2. Revolution vs Rotation. The basic difference between the two movements is the nature of the movement. The rotation means to circle around one’s own axis while the revolution means to circle around any other object.…

We need to stand up, fight, and make a change. The climate fiction genre reminds us of how detrimental denial is and that activism is the way to go. Just like in many of the texts mentioned above, any ordinary person can overcome their fear and focus on trying to remedy our foolhardy mistakes. If society ever wants to repair the damage done to the earth, people should get involved and become activists. We, as a society need to open our eyes to the truth.…

The video “The Most Terrifying Video you’ll Ever See” by Greg Craven is a video that discusses whether there should be significant action taken on climate change. Craven addresses one of the main problems with the climate change debate, which is that it has become a long bitter argument about whether climate change is real and if it is caused by human development. He is arguing that it doesn’t matter if climate change is real or not, significant action should be taken to further prevent or combat climate change because when faced with uncertainty about the future taking action is the only reasonable choice. I disagree with Craven because there should be a greater focus on information and facts when it comes to making a decision about climate…

Although Copernicus was right about a few things, he was wrong about the idea of the Sun being the center of the universe and being motionless because in fact the Sun did move as well as the stars. Also, Ptolemy and Copernicus both believed the orbits of the planets were circular, but they were actually elliptical. While the Ptolemy’s geocentric model was really good at predicting planetary positioning, it wasn't accurate. Copernicus’s model explained the true motions of planets, using the motion of the Earth around the sun as a common aspect or cause while Ptolemy’s posed numerous separate causes to the motion of each planet due to him having to replicate Earth’s motion in relation to the Sun. While Ptolemy's model seemed to merely accommodate…

Precession of the Earth is like a spinning top because the weight at the top of the Earth and the rapid spinning of the Earth on its axis causes it to tip on either side. This leads to a cone shaped path like that of a spinning top (Seeds 17).…

Global warming, also known as climate change, is the rising of the Earth’s temperature due to greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide, getting trapped in the atmosphere. When the gases can not leave the atmosphere, they absorb radiation and sunlight from the sun and make the atmosphere warmer.…
