Hip Pain: A Short Story

Superior Essays
It originated as just a normal October Wednesday in Pillager, MN. Eli was awoken from his deep slumber by his Dad at 9:00 am, just like every other day of the week. Once he finishes climbing out of his deep slumber, Eli grabs some clothes and gingerly heads up the stairs. Now Eli isn’t like most kids his age, which at this time he is 15 and in 10th grade, he has chronic hip pain and sleeps close to 18 hours a day. He has visited many doctors, been diagnosed with Lyme disease and many other things. Up until now, nothing has cured him, but hopefully soon that will change. Back to the story, Eli slowly limps up the stairs, due to his immense right hip pain they are quite painful for him. Once up the stairs, he begrudgingly says to his dad, “Good …show more content…
Turning the hot water on full and cold on slightly, as he does every morning, Eli waits for the bath to fill. While he’s waiting Eli takes an Aleve, which he found to be the only pain medication that had an effect on his hip pain. Strangely, though, with all of the treatments they’ve tried for his hip, the one that works the best is still just an old fashioned hot bath. So, that’s what he takes one every morning to help lessen his hip pain and let him function on a slightly increased basis. After a few minutes, the bath is full and Eli strips down and slides into his hot sanctuary. To pass the time, he checks ESPN, reads and watches Netflix; pretty much anything to prevent him from falling asleep while in the …show more content…
The antithesis of Band, Eli dreads calculus because he can rarely stay alert and interactive in the classroom. This day isn’t any different. Struggling the entire hour to stay focused, he only half learns the topics covered during the day’s lecture. Eli is quite intelligent and he knows it won’t take him too long to grasp the necessary knowledge at home. Morosely, that is still extra time he will need to spend being productive, in lieu of resting and recovering. The merciful, high pitch ring of the bell can’t come fast enough for Eli, but after what seems like an eternity he hears its glorious

During my time in clinicals on a pediatric floor, I have participated in the discharge of patients and their parents. Pain management and comfort were two of the few topics that parents expressed concern about after discharge teaching. While the nurse attempted to address these issues, it felt as though the parents left the hospital without full confidence in how to manage their child’s pain. It became clear that parents needed further, specific discharge education on pain management when their children were prescribed at-home analgesics.…

I remember meeting Mr. Stanley his first semester at Ohio State. He wandered in to Denny Hall lost, looking for his English class, so I gave him directions. We had a conversation during the walk through Denny and he told me he was in the Army. I immediately asked him what brought you to Ohio State after 12 years and his response wanted to go to college to become an Orthopedic Surgeon. His reasoning was very interesting to me because, he received back surgery that was the wrong type of operation, so he wanted to ensure this doesn’t happen to other patients by becoming a surgeon himself.…
