Kanye West is an American hip hop recording artist, fashion designer, songwriter, producer and record label executive. West graced upon popular culture in 2004 when he released his first single and video “All Falls Down” from his debut album The College Dropout. Kanye West is among the few hip hop artist Millennials can classify as a “musical genius” and now, as a fashion icon. West has adorned us with his much anticipated and successful Yeezy sneakers through both Nike and Adidas. He has released three “seasons” from his Yeezy clothing line and blessed us with multiple creative and elaborate collaborations through art work, fashion, and limited edition collection pieces. When his first album The College Dropout released he referred to himself as “The Louis Vuitton Don” on the song “Last Call” making this a popular alias. In 2007 he collaborates with Bathing Ape with his iconic Graduation bear. At this time, Kanye West also popularized the shutter shades. President Barack Obama and Paris Hilton were amoung the many who followed this trend along with the general population. By 2008 Kanye created his first clothing line Pastelle which was much anticipated but unfortunately canceld before it was produced. It wasn’t until 2009 that West had his first successful collaboration with Louis Vuitton. Kanye West x Louis Vuitton was first presented during Paris fashion week, then produced merchandise world wide. After collaborating with Louis Vuitton Kanye released his Nike Air Yeezy 1’s in stores. Music is yet another successful venture of Kanye West’s. In 2004 he began his label with his very frist artist being John Legend and Common soon artists such as Big Sean, Pusha T, and Teyana Taylor were amoung his roster. Together, he and GOOD Music began the “Rosewood Movement” in 2010 where he and his group would wear the same sharply tailored black suit. West wanted to raise the level of sophistacation in the hip hop industry. He wanted to influence his followers and peers to dress sharper as oapossed to his previous hip hop techno style. In interviews he explained that the Rosewood Movement was more than a fashion movement it was about good manners, no public profanity, “calling your grandmother” and “taking care of your kids.”Many labels designed tailored black suits following this trend.
