The three main hip hop elements are sharp movements, dancing into the ground, and musicality. Sharp and tense movements are a key characteristic of hip hop and without it hip hop looks very sloppy. Dancing into the ground is basically keeping it low and kind of being heavy and having big movements. Musicality is really important for hip hop and it is essentially timing and how the movements relate to the music. Hip hop moves often times reflect the beat of the song and style. In addition to the main elements, some of the fundamentals of dance and hip hop that were reiterated were things such …show more content…
This means clearly defined and tense movements. This is similar to hip hop and very important for jazz. The next main element is having long lines and pointed toes. This essentially leads back to having good technique. If long lines and pointed toes are not used in jazz, it makes the dance look sloppier and less together. The last main element of jazz dance is grace and control. In terms of jazz dancing, this means moving clearly with a purpose, looking like you know what you are doing. This is something different from hip hop, because hip hop is down to the ground, but jazz is more lifted and graceful. Some of the other things that were repeated in this unit would include having pointed toes, spotting, doing it full out and lifting up if you feel like you might fall. Those are important in the style and contribute to being more graceful and having good technique. What are the fundamentals of creating Choreography? We didn't necessarily have a unit on this, but you learned how to choreograph and what's important to remember when choreographing. What do you remember being repeated over and over again before you began choreographing?
Some of the most important things about choreographing is to remember the main elements of whatever style it is. This also ensures that everything flows. It’s also important to not repeat the same moves over and over again, yet not pack it too tight. If there are too many things going on at once it may seem busy and be distracting. Sometimes when there is something big in the music on certain counts, it flows better to put the leaps or bigger movements in there. This is what I have learned about choreographing.
My favorite unit was probably the modern unit. Being that I sat out during the jazz unit, I only had 2 units but I preferred the modern unit because it had some ballet technique but also emotion. I thought it looked cool and was also a challenge at the same time, so it was my favorite. I would have liked to have spent more time actually participating in jazz because I like jazz and have done it many times before, and I was sad to sit out during that unit. I would have liked to spend more time on that unit learning new steps but I did also learn a lot more about choreographers through the research paper. I think that the most beneficial unit for me was the hip hop unit. I had almost no experience
