Loud beats, shouts and footsteps fill my ears, and an awful stench of sweat makes it’s way into my nose, but this dance studio is a special place nonetheless. It may seem hectic and rowdy to some people, but not to me. An environment I entered so cautiously at first started to become natural and safe. I had never thought I would spend so much time in this place doing something I loved. I would not forget how the first day went.…
Beauty twirling into madness Topless, feathers, Dance Moms and music, all words splashed around on an article written by Jemma Nicoll, UTS journalism graduate and freelance writer. These words have stricken shock and astonishment in the hearts of many after reading about children from the ages 8-15 being over-sexualized through a cultural movement – dance. What used to be smiling, skipping and pirouettes has twisted into crumping, twerking and #tilttuesdays, posing in skimpy undies and crop tops ‘only grownups should be wearing’ as many parents and onlookers have commented. Personally, as I grew up, I was taught never to judge when I don’t know the full story.…
One thing that is truly impressive of Harris’ work is that he has created, perfected, and maintained a style, that continues to rise above the negative stereotype hip-hop is sometimes painted with in the media. In doing this he is maintaining the sophistication of the art of dance. As mentioned on his organization’s…
In “Hip-Hop’s Year of Dangerous Living Put the Accused on the Charts” by Jon Caramanica, the author describes the recent trend of people with criminal records becoming sensations in the hip-hop/rap community. The author keys in on three main factors as of why these troubling artists are becoming so popular. The hip hop community’s tolerance of complicated histories, lack of understanding their artists’ backgrounds, and young and misleading crowd stands as the author’s factors as to why these artists are becoming successful. Jon Caramanica understands that the hip-hop genre has a culture that consists of a wide accepting of troublemaking. According to the author, the genre is switching from a more pleasant-sounding, soothing genre into a tougher, darker genre.…

Addison Gayle’s main argument is that if Blacks are not angry, then they are not Black, which is seen as de-Americanization. According to the literature from Gayle, “The black artist in the American society who creates without interjecting a note of anger is creating not as a black man, but as an American” (Gayle 1912). The misconception here is how readers view his claim peculiar because Blacks do not always have to be angry to prove that they are Black, as if Gayle is saying that being Black but not angry removes them from blackness. Blacks can be proud and not angry, right? The last thing Whites want to see from the Blacks that is stereotypical is anger because Black people are seen as savages, which is “double consciousness.”…
Make nice hip-hop beats because you will need them when you want to show artists looking for suitable beats to sing or rap over. The best way is to know places…
My experience at the Heartbeat workshop and Spirits Rising concert was both educational and enjoyable. These events explored the culture of the Native Americans of the Great Lakes area. The workshop included participation in traditional dance, an example of both traditional and arranged music, a version of the Native American creation story, and a summary of the culture throughout history. The concert was an excellent opportunity to learn through observation, but I mostly took the chance to enjoy a new type of music. It also included audience participation in a traditional round dance and continuing access to their music.…
Hip hop artist and basketball players are both performers, who have a rich connection and similar persona, showcasing style, swagger, urbanism, bravado, and coolness. This rich bond was established in 1979; from 1984 to 2009, a new era was conceived, known as “The Dunkadelic Era.” In 1979, the first mainstream explicit connection between hip-hop and basketball was established. The Sugarhill Gang’s hit song “Rapper’s Delight,” which is commonly referred to as the first mainstream hip-hop song, had lyrics about basketball.…
The dances of this country date back about 3,000 years. In the beginning, the movements were simply for entertainment and to provide a sense of unity within the communities. However, between the 1870s and the 1900s, these dances began to have a more significant meanings. “Africa faced European imperialist aggression, diplomatic pressures, military invasions, and eventual conquest” (Iweriebor). Even though Ethiopia itself was never colonized, the continent around them was exploited and dominated by Europeans.…
Hip hop is a cultural movement that began its journey during the early 1970s, among African American young children’s residing in the South Bronx in New York City. The term hip hop is often used in a restrictive fashion as synonymous only with the oral practice of the rap music genre. The origin of the hip hop culture stems from the block parties of the Ghetto Brothers.…
The most graceful and grueling performing art of all, ballet, was created during the Italian Renaissance period and was later developed in France and Russia. It is a technical form of dance that includes ravishing, elegant arm movements along with perplexing, impressive footwork. Consisting of more than just steps, it allows space for both physical and mental growth. Ballet provides more than just the ability to perform steps and recognize the corresponding names, such as “plie” or “pirouette”. Long-lasting effects are presented on human beings, such as physical and mental improvements.…
Dance has been a part of my life since the age of 4. Every time I am onstage with the lights shining on me, I stand with a sense of pride and reflect that through all the long rehearsals I have finally made it. While dance has helped me make friends and stay healthy, it has also helped me learn many valuable life skills which I will apply to my future. Dance has taught me perseverance.…
Breakdancing marked the beginning of the hip-hop movement in dance. It consisted of unique styles and movements that still exist in breakdancing today. Breakdancing, or “b-boying” rapidly grew since the 1970s and is popular amongst many street dancers today. The history behind breakdancing derived mainly from Puerto Rican and African American dancers in New York. These dancers brought different movements and terminology within breakdancing that are very iconic within this style of dance.…
