Today, the caste system of may not be as strict as it was in the past, but discrimination against lower castes still exists. In the past, the caste system socially placed people into different classes or varnas by occupation. The caste one was in determined the people one could interact with and the occupations one could take, based on cleanliness. In modern times, the caste system is not as strict as it was before, but it has become another way for people to compete for power and resources. Despite that it is written in the Indian constitution that everybody has equal rights, people of the lower castes have not experienced many changes in the way they are treated. There is still disrespectful and brusque behavior expressed towards these people. The untouchable caste for instance is the lowest place to be in the caste system and is so low that they are outside of the caste system; they experience much discrimination. However, because of their treatment and status in society, many of the untouchables turned towards Islam to try and find their liberation. The Muslims in India mainly consist of the former Hindu untouchable caste. If aspects like the caste system can drive away people from Hinduism to the point of having another religion in India mostly consist of the former poorly treated members of Hinduism, then that is a definite problem for the growth and spreading of Hinduism. Currently, the caste system is seen as a major threat to the modernization of India. This system will hold India back from progressing as a country and make Hinduism
