“Hinduism is a major world religion, not merely by virtue of its many followers, but also because of its profound influence on many other religions during its long, unbroken history, beginning about 1500 BC.” (Hinduism). The term Hinduism comes from the Indus river which flows through Pakistan. Hinduism is one of the oldest religions in the world, out of all the larger belief systems. The Hindu religion has been around for thousands of years and contains many beliefs, practices, and types of worship. Hindus have a bountiful amount of gods, including the god Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu, this idea can be contrasted with the Christian ideal of one God. Hinduism originated in India and is still practiced around the world today. The people of the Hindu religion can be monotheist, atheist, or polytheist. The creation story for Hindus is very different from many religions version of creation (Deshpande, Sudhanva). The story starts with a giant sleeping serpent. The serpent was in a huge body of water and was carrying lord Vishnu,who was fast asleep. The sound AUM could be heard and grew louder and started to fill all the empty space. This woke up Vishnu and a lotus flower grew from his belly button (Hinduism). In the middle of the flower was the god Brahma and Vishnu told Brahma to create a world and fill it with creatures and beutiful matter.
