The Hillsborough Community Teams Up to Create The Second Strategic Plan

The Second Strategic Plan strives for new windows of opportunities for future HHS students by revamping the school. Hillsborough High School has given students the ability to explore career education, technology, family and independent life skills, music, and athletics. With the help of the community, The Second Strategic Plan aims for expanding these opportunities by the possibility of building a new school.

“If we build a new high school, we would be improving all the classes, science labs, and shops.” Ms. Karen Bingert, the principal of Hillsborough High School said. Other focuses include improved athletic facilities and performing arts.

Every five years, Dr. Schiff makes changes that accomplish his goals. While the strategic plan has been discussed for two years now, the process can still take many years. So far, the school has had brainstorming meetings in which anyone in the public- students, teachers, parents, faculty, etc., have been invited to to pitch in ideas.
“I think it’s a big decision for the community. I went to school here but that was many years ago, and the community was different. Truthfully, I won’t be here when a new school opens, but my job is to prepare information for people to make an inform decision to build a new school or what will be in that school.” Mr. Michael Simborski, one of the vice principals of HHS said. “It’s also very hard to predict, especially with technology advances, what a public school will look fifty years from now. Truthfully, that’s what we need to prosper. What are things going to be like in 2050?” After some meetings, the ideas were put into three themes which include student life, early childhood education, and college career readiness. In order to accomplish these ideas, the district would need to build a new school. Next year is also the year where the board and superintendent are going to look over the plan to determine if the school should go further in this plan or not, and one meeting regarding the plan is scheduled this

Mr.Simborski listed questions that need to be looked at in order to make the plan successful such as “How do we facilitate our own students and their interests? If the [auditorium] was big enough would other groups in the community be interested in using it? Do we need a third turf?” If the board goes further with the plan, they would also need to go out to the community and ask them for permission to borrow money.
“If the community says ‘yes,’ then we go through a different process, where personal interest is paid on bonds. The bonds are sold at a bonding market, then we pay the principal interest on the bond. Some funds come from the state and the state pays 40%.” said Dr. Schiff. Taxpayers contribute money as well.

The community has participated in making the plan, but few students appeared at the meetings regarding it. But, two sophomore students, Sheasha Patel and Abigail Banchevski, did suggest some ideas. Patel recommended, “More room for the marching band for marching band practices. I think they should also improve the heater system in the school because it’s so cold in my classes.” She added the idea that the locker rooms should be based off of grade rather than having only a freshman locker room and the rest of the grades held up in another. Banchevski suggested, “I would like a period that is dedicated to relaxing. Lunch is also not long enough, so I think we should have an extra period and a longer

When the new superintendent demonstrated a collaborative leadership style by forming a Principal interview team that included both veteran and new teachers to choose the new principal, it well-received; therefore, as the new principal, following through with a similar collaborative style would likely be successful. In my perspective, the principal needs to develop a strategic plan that creates a shared vision and goals with a variety of stakeholders, provides professional development for the staff to achieve those goals, and reaches into the community to develop partnerships and positive relationships.…
