The short story, “Hills Like White Elephants” was written by Ernest Hemingway, and was originally published in 1927. Mr. Hemingway didn’t put a lot in his stories, he made his stories you use your mind to understand. He uses many words to help guide you in the direction of the main reason for the story. In, “Hills Like White Elephants” Hemingway used three important motives: White Elephant, Train Station, and Operation. Those three play an important part throughout the entire story. With that said, the White Elephant symbolized something that they didn’t want, the Train Station symbolized them heading in different routes, and the Operation symbolized an abortion. In addition, the whole time throughout the story, the man was extremely insensitive …show more content…
I also believe it’s not right to push someone into something as serious as an abortion. These types of procedures cause tons of pain on many people. With that said not everyone can just get up and be like, “I want this procedure done,” people need time to think and try to understand what’s going on. Life is something very important to many people, you just never know what someone is feeling. Therefore, that’s why I believe, before something like that happens have a supportive partner, things may go a little better. I honestly didn’t agree with this text. I feel like the things that went down in the story were very faulty. Also, the girl, instead of being called a woman, she was called a girl, she was a young at that going through a super tough decision. As well as, not having any support at all. I feel like you should always have someone to count on during times like that, good or bad. “"I love you now. You know I love you." "I know. But if I do it, then it will be nice again if I say things are like white elephants, and you 'll like it?" "I 'll love it. I love it now but I just can 't think about it. You know how I get when I worry." "If I do it you won 't ever worry?" " I won 't worry about that because it 's perfectly simple."” (Hemingway) She was insecure with her relationship with the man, she wanted to make sure if she did this procedure things would go back to …show more content…
He used little words to discuss a huge topic and I enjoyed that a lot. He didn’t make me lose interest fast, he made me want to keep looking at analysis and understanding. Although, I wouldn’t want to read another story like this, I couldn’t agree with this text at all. The things that happened in this story made me understand, people still to this day will do anything in their power to end something that could possibly end up being good. Not because they wanted to, yet people like their partners tell them how things will be so much better. In the end, some people end up more hurt than before. Many people should read this to see just how some people in the world are. With that said, I would like to read another story from Hemingway, but maybe not one about

She wrote this book so beautifully it opened my eyes, I constantly complain about my parents and how they are so noisy about knowing what is going on in my life. It is better to have noisy parents then irresponsible ones. She used such powerful words that made you want to continue reading. The strengths of this book are that is it an easy read, it makes you grateful and also it opens your eyes and makes you realize that not everyone’s family life is just like yours, some people are raised differently than you are. Even though I really enjoyed this book I did find a few weaknesses, one being that at times it was difficult to read and not because of the wording but because of the content.…

Even if Hemmingway wrote that it is nothing more than an abortion commentary I believe it holds more water elsewhere in life. Simply put after reading it many times I see it as the perfect story for the problems of love. It shows one simpler minded character who cares and a mature character who wants to escape the confounding fear. Both are conversing over a mutual problem affecting their lives.…

Ernest Hemingway’s story “Hills Like White Elephants” is a perfectly simple story on the outside, but when you delve into the depths you uncover hidden meanings, symbols, and a tense situation. As Alex Link, a student from York University, explained, from an onlookers’ point of view there is very little that occurs between the two protagonists. Link describes the encounter as: “a couple has drinks at a train station in Spain and argues about something rather vague” (Link 66). To the untrained eye, this is exactly what happens. But when you take a closer look, we see a couple with a strained relationship discussing a complicated procedure and the outcome of their relationship in the long run.…

I enjoyed her very metaphorical and descriptive way of narrating such a traumatic event. As I was reading the story, I was able to imagine myself in her position and I had a clearer understanding of her thoughts by the detail. Her thoughts throughout the story were very interesting and the bits of humor mixed in between the serious event was entertaining to me. The story reminded me of going hiking in very rocky and hilly areas. The ambulance ride reminded me of driving down the dirt road that connects to my street, especially after a storm or heavy rain, since it is very bumpy, rocky, and filled with deep potholes.…

Ernest Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants”: The Norton Introduction to Literature (Hemmingway 590), is a short story that plays out in a bar. My initial assessment of the dialogue between a man only described as an American and what I believe is his girlfriend named Jig is one of amusement. It is just an interesting, lighthearted banter exchange between two individuals over drinks, passing the time until the train arrives. I was roughly half way through my initial reading when I slowed down to truly absorb the words. I took me a moment to realize the situation playing out between this man and women is actually quite serious.…

Conversations can seem like words and sentences being passed back and forth between one another, but looking deeper, they divulge a larger idea. A person’s meaning can be more than just the words they are speaking, very much like and iceberg; 1/8 of the iceberg is visible, but under the surface, the true size is revealed. Ernest Hemingway used this technique in his short story “Hills like White Elephants.” The story is about two people, a man and a woman, sitting at the train station having beers and talking. At first it is just small talk, but then the man brings up the fact that the woman, Jig, should have the operation.…
