Both the American and Jig were not sure if they would continue to keep the unborn child or not, in which they made themselves confused. Instead of the American and Jig act like mature adults, both wants to be mutually in love rather than having a child that can bring them happiness in their life. As future parents, both has to realize that their loss is important like any other human. Furthermore, both characters in the story show a trait of fear in the story. “Or perhaps their whiteness marks them as unnatural elephants – sports – and suggests the unnatural aspect of the abortion the girl fears so much” (Maynard). The American and the girl were noticing that if they continue to keep the unborn child, their relationship would not be the same. Jig does not fear having the abortion done, but fears the outcome that it would bring between herself and the American. The couple fears that their love for each other is going to be disrupted by their new born
