Hillel Center Assignment

For this assignment, I went to the Ohio State Hillel Center. The Hillel Center, while close to campus, was rather hard to get to due to the construction in the area. The building is not one that I would assume was a religious one, as there were no religious markers on the exterior of the building. In the foyer of the Hillel Center, there is a table in which the candles that symbolized the beginning of the Shabbat ceremony sat on. Around the table sat many pieces of informational literature explaining the rituals of the ceremony as well as contact cards for the rabbi and other people who worked there. The pieces of literature explained the significance of the lighting of the candles, the blessing of the bread during dinner, and Kiddush. There was also a bulletin board where anyone could post information about gatherings (religious or not) and inviting anyone to come. The congregants of the Hillel Center generally dressed in what some would call “Sunday best,” or on the dressier side of everyday clothing. Both the men and the women were dressed rather conservatively; most wore long pants and long sleeves. It was unclear to me if it was due to the Jewish culture and what is considered acceptable to wear to Shabbat services or if it was weather related. Most of the men wore yarmulkes; some had …show more content…
I went to the Conservative one, which was entirely in Hebrew. The prayers were read by Ohio State students, and at the end of the service, any student interested in reading prayers in an upcoming service were encouraged to express their interest. Throughout the services, there were many ways to see differences in practice of faith, even within the same denomination. While praying, some turned to face east, the direction of the Temple of Jerusalem, while some stood facing forward; other times, some performed a bowing action while reciting prayers, while others stood

Lauren Winner’s Mudhouse Sabbath discusses many conflicting views between Christianity and Judaism. Chapter five of Mudhouse Sabbath addresses tefillah, or prayer. This chapter is important because it shows that prayer between religions can actually be very similar, but still have some distinct differences. Winner starts the chapter with a story from her early teens. She talks about Ruby Lichtensein, an older member of the synagogue, who gives Lauren a prayer book for her Bat Mitzvah.…

Introduction Religious organizations, especially on college campuses, can sometimes be viewed by the public as intimidating due to the rules and stereotypes associated with religious groups. Journey, a Christian worshiping community at the College of Charleston, encourages an open-minded approach to spiritual growth throughout college by communicating with students in a way that welcomes all types of students without judgment. This organization is a discourse community, a group of people that share common goals and communicate about a particular topic, at the College of Charleston. To determine this, I compared Journey to the discourse community discussed by John Swales in his academic article. In his piece, Swales explains that to be a true…

For many, religious buildings are viewed as a sanctuary: a place to seek refuge from this wild and confusing world, to be at peace with your soul, to find and develop a connection with a higher being, and to be in a state of mindfulness to absorb religious teachings in an attempt to understand life. Religious buildings are a safe place for people to worship alongside others, or they can be a safe place for people to pray and focus on their individual relationships with a higher being. Last year, someone violated and desecrated one of these sacred places, leaving an entire community and country scarred and mourning: Dylann Roof. Last year, nine African American parishioners were shot and killed by Roof during a Bible study at a church in Charleston,…

As part of an old high school tradition, hundreds of students crowded into a dimly lit cafeteria and danced until the air hung heavy and sweat glistened off every square inch of exposed skin. The schools that began the tradition of the modern homecoming dance most likely did not expect it to evolve into what it is today; at some point, we, as students, lost the true purpose of the event and instead became preoccupied with image. Even though I would have liked to think that those things did not matter, I still found myself altering my appearance that Saturday night to try and show off the best version of myself. I was not alone; other females joined me amidst a pile of cosmetic products and styling tools, and we had the pictures to showcase…

Synagogue is a Jewish church where people gather for worship. In comparison, in Conservative Judaism men and women sit together and women participate fully in the synagogue services, prayers and rituals (Israil and Judaism Studies). One interesting fact that I found out that Orthodox and Conservatives have a different word for church. Orthodox call it shul and Conservatives call it synagogue. There is also a slight difference that distinguishes Orthodox from Conservatives when it comes to rabbis.…

Although they share similar beliefs and traditions, Orthodox Judaism is a strict sect of Judaism while the Conservative movement is centred on maintaining the balance between tradition and modernity. The Orthodox Jews are distinguished by interpreting every word of the Torah literally as well as traditions such as worshiping fully in Hebrew and viewing women’s priorities as being housewives. Conservative Judaism branches off by being more lenient with factors regarding Sabbath, the Torah’s laws and principles, and opposing segregation in the synagogue. Nonetheless, Conservative and Orthodox Judaism both believe in the divinity of the Torah, conducting synagogue services in Hebrew, as well as seeing themselves as the chosen ones. Given its comparable…

When Christianity was in its infancy, it mimicked Jewish tradition. There were set prayers at set times of the day. Their prayer life was very ritualistic. They fumbled through their faith doing their best to please God. They helplessly sought out a rhythm in prayer by reading the sacred text.…
