Hillcrest Case Study

Baylor Scott and White Hillcrest Medical Center, formally known as Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, is a 144-bed acute care hospital with a 96-bed women and children’s facility. Hillcrest is located at the intersection of Highway 6 and Interstate 35 in Waco. Hillcrest serves the medical needs of Central Texas and is the only Level II Trauma Center located in McLennan County. In the early 1900s, Hillcrest first opened as the Central Texas Baptist Sanitarium and School of Nursing. After facing numerous obstacles and name changes, Hillcrest continued to flourish. Since its establishment, Hillcrest has strongly focused on the educational development of clinicians and still maintains that focus today. Hillcrest also continues to carry-out its long-term partnership with the McLennan Community College (MCC) School of Nursing. As an outcome of the merger of Scott & White Health System and Baylor Health Care System, Baylor Scott and White Hillcrest Medical Center developed a strong relationship with Baylor University. My preceptor, Dana Dinsmore, is the Manager of Education. Dana was a wonderful leader to myself and the Education Team and was always there when I needed help. Jamie Generals, the Director of Quality and Education, was another wonderful mentor. Jamie checked in on me on a regular basis to see how I was doing and always made sure I was never bored. The educators in the department, June Fahey-Moran, Rachel Henry, Jennifer Cain, and Linda Rynearson, were all welcoming and supportive associates that trusted me with any assignments or help asked of me. The administrative assistant of the Education Department, Lizz Crowson, was a key member during my field placement. Lizz and I shared a small office together apart from the rest of the department.
