Since 1969, America has seen an extensive range of presidents in terms of style, personality, rhetoric and overall demeanor towards the American people. A good deal of these qualities overlap in candidates who have won the election. For example most president-elects have said they have strong family values, support a strong American military, and promise to be tough on crime. While these stances have been pitched differently over the years, they all share the same basic ethos; reassurance. It seems that the American electorate respond best to candidates who continually reassure the American people of the inevitability of America thriving under that particular leader’s guidance.…

Lisa McGirr’s book Suburban Warriors: The origins of the New American Right, published in 2001, examines the history of the conservative grassroots movement in Orange County, California during the 1960s and 1970s. With a “bottom up” lens, McGirr focused on ordinary people behind the grass-roots conservatism rather than the intellectual and political leaders. Historian Richard Hofstadter believed right-wing activists acted purely on their “psychological distress” rather than being motivated by a set of beliefs or “rational politics” (7). In response, McGirr argues that the ordinary people who created conservative grassroots were usually already involved with modernity. Many of them were mobile migrants who welcomed entrepreneurialism and already…

During the early 1980s, Americans of all races, sexes, and social statuses subscribed to the notion that one could be successful through hard work and determination. In his dark comedy Glengarry Glen Ross, David Mamet exposes this to be, as stated previously, nothing more than a notion. In this two-act play, working class men, including young and cunning salesman, Ricky Roma, do business in a sales office under the supervision of meek office manager John Williamson. The salesmen are forced into a competition within the office where the top salesman receives a Cadillac, and the two lowest salesmen of the month lose their jobs. As could be expected, the men try desperately to sell their real estate using any means necessary to close a deal, often…
