In the wake of a terrorist attack, individuals are faced with many emotions such as grief and disgust, and many people feel vulnerable and unprotected. It is the responsibility of prominent politicians to console their communities. One such instance of the Pulse Nightclub shooting on June 12th, 2016. It was a tragic event for Americans and the LGBT community, but it offered presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, an opportune moment to discuss her plans to defeat terrorism. Her address on June 13th, 2016 to the employees of Team Wendy in Cleveland, Ohio asserts that her plans to end terrorism across the globe will be effective. She substantiates her plan by instilling a sense of care and trust, by using emotional and situational appeals, and by targeting specific members of her audience.
Clinton opens her speech with the reminder that the presidential election is approaching. If Clinton was giving this speech, but she was not in the presidential race, then her plans to stop terrorism would have been invalid because she would not have the power to reform any laws without being president.
