In the second presidential debate, both candidates have many topics to talk about with one major argument. Although the some people believe that the characteristics of a person doesn’t matter in order to run the country, throughout the second presidential debate, both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump made it clear that good character was important in the role of being the president of the United States. Both of the Candidates used all three main rhetorical strategies-ethos, pathos, and logos to try to gain public support. Right at the beginning, Hillary Clinton uses pathos, appeal to emotion, when she was attempting to answer the first question about whether they think that they are modeling the appropriate behavior for the youth. After the first question was asked, Hillary had the chance to answer. But instead of answering about whether she is a good role model for students of not, she goes on to talk about how important it is to make sure that the children know how good of a country the live in and how fortunate they are. By doing this she uses red herring, avoiding the question, and goes off on her own still making herself sound convincing. Also, Donald Trump uses these strategies. During the debate one of the times that Trump and Clinton are trying to make each other's character look bad, Trump brings up Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton's wife to make her look bad. By doing this he is using ad hominem by association. By using ad hominem, attacking one's character to undermine their argument, Trump is able to make Clinton's character look bad. But at the same time he is weakening his argument by trying to avoid the accusations from Hillary. Both of the candidates use fallacies without knowing it, weakening their …show more content…
They both make it more than clear that in order to run this country, a person needs to have good character. They try to hide the flaws in their character by focusing on the other and what they plan on doing if they become the president. When a question would be aimed at them they would expertly steer clear from it and try to turn their argument onto the opposing side. While both candidates are only trying to win the votes of the American citizens, they are also trying to make connections with people. They both want the citizens to have pride and love for their country. Even if they have flaws in their arguments, Trump and Hilary make it clear to their audience that the character of the president needs to be honest and they need to be

As Lester Holt introduced the candidates and the debate, the rhetorical approach pathos was used before the candidates even opened their mouths. Hillary Clinton had a warm inviting facial expression as she entered the stage, as to where Donald Trump looked stuck up and had a disgusted look as if he didn’t want to be at the debate. Hillary Clinton is a career politician and Donald Trump is very successful business leader. Each one brings into the political arena an agenda for people to consider. Government and Politics The 2016 election is just around the corner. Our leading candidates are Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.
