Since 1977, sixty-five American diplomatic personnel have been killed by terrorists. (Clinton par. 3) Due to the fact that it is considered blasphemous by the Islamic faith to portray the Prophet Muhammad in any way, heresy, typically through the media, is often believed to be the cause of these conflicts. The United States is blamed for some of this blasphemy; therefore,the nation is targeted by Muslim terrorist groups. The partnership of the United State’s Bureau for Democracy, Conflict, and Humanitarian Assistance and the National Endowment for Democracy will lay middle eastern conflict, such as the 2012 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, to rest by reinforcing the existing Libyan government and also funding a fair democracy. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton released a statement shortly after the event discussing the tragedy. She sympathized with the families of the fallen and explained how all of those that lost their lives in the Benghazi attack had years of experience in the Middle East, and were dedicated to solving problems in that portion of the world (Clinton n.pag.). The installment of a true democracy would benefit countries like Libya because it would separate the governing body, religion, and military. The running combination of these three institutions is leading many Islamic Libyans to extremism, since it is the popular and also most powerful choice. This Muslim extremism is one of the justifications used by terrorists to fuel their crimes. Referring back to Hillary Clinton’s initial testimony, the Secretary of State said, “[The United States] are using our diplomatic and economic tools to support these emerging democracies and to strengthen security forces and help provide a path away from extremism” (Clinton n. pag.). With both money and guidance from our democratic country, where church and state have been separated for decades, Middle Eastern countries can find peace. Giving the citizens of the nation a say in their government makes them less likely to revolt or violently protest. In turn, it would prevent the development of smaller, uncivilized groups taking complete control of city administrations. Since efforts are already being made in the Middle East to move towards democracy, the United States must come in with both the brains and brawn to support them.
