In biochemistry it is defined as substance that interferes with or inhibits the physiological action of another. Hemingway acknowledged that it is hard to determine who is the protagonist and antagonist of the story on the issues of abortion. The action that Hemingway took in this short story is amiable because he understood that it was and still is inflammatory issues in society, which divide people into two main groups, those in favor and those opposes to it practices. As a reader of Ernest Hemingway, one could understand that there are more parts to this discussion, other than agree or disagree. Society should resolve those issues that lead to this discussion of abortion. One of those factors that contribute to the creation of this decision is peer pressure, Hemingway express this factor in an excellent way, when it presents the conversation between the girl and her lover. He states “you know I love you” (75) and she continues the discussion with “I know. But if I do it, then it will be nice again.” (75) The author gives it readers the idea that the girl is being pressure to do an abortion because she needs the attention that her lover displaces in other to lead her to questionable choices. As a reader, one could understand that decisions under pressure are questionable because most individual do not have the time to fully analysis the effect of those decisions in their lives. Furthermore, it lead that person to regret decision under pressure and living in a world of what if. She generates an erroneous model, where she forget about her principles to pleases a selfish person as some would consider the man character in this short story. Those erroneous model are develop in the story when women states in her line “that’s the only thing the bother us. It’s the only thing that’s made us unhappy” (75). She is telling the reader this pregnancy produce this detached from her love, this generates another question. This question is does he really love her or he is just using her? Base on the short story “Hill like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway, readers conclude that he is does not really lover, because if he love her, he would not lead her to the abortion and it consequences. Hemingway does a magnificent work in the short story, because he does not take a side in this topic, gather bring to view the aspects that lead this decision.
