Hildegard Of Bingen Research Paper

Hildegard of Bingen was born in 1098 and was a significant influence during her time in the 1100's. At the age of eight she went to be educated at the Benedictine monastery at Mount St Disibode. When she turned eighteen, she became a nun. About twenty years later, she became the head of the female community at the monastery. (1) During this time and even after, she had a number of visions and dedicated a decade of her life writing them down. She would describe these visions and at times would even draw pictures of them. She would also make comments about these visions and would try to analysis the meaning of them. (1) A Pope sent a commission to examine her work. It is said that her teaching was conventional and her visions were realistic. After this was said the Pope sent her a letter of approval. After receiving this letter she wrote the Pope back advising him to work harder for improvement of the Church. (1) …show more content…
People were quite moved by her preaching’s and was even asked if she would provide written copies them. A year before she passed away she had gotten in trouble because she had provided a Christian burial for a man that was debarred. (1) She claimed that this man repented and deserved a burial service. Her monastery was exposed to a proscription, but her protest was persuasive, so the proscription was withdrawn. When she passed away she did leave several poems and books behind. (1) Some of her books had medical and pharmaceutical advice. These books dealt with the human body and how it worked. One of the other books had things in it about various herbs. These books were not based on her visions but on her observations. It is said that some researchers are now looking at some of her writings, hoping to find therapeutic assets of a plant that has been unnoticed until now.
