He was accepted, but a problem arose when he went to the US Embassy to extend his visa. "The government was suspicious. They said 'you are just switching your studies so that you can stay in this country longer’ and they denied me a new student visa and said I had to go back to the Philippines. I was so worried. Your grandma and I had only five dollars in the bank. How was I going to buy plane tickets?" The next day at work, one of the nurses noticed his sadness and asked him what was wrong. After explaining his situation to her, she gave him the names of a her cousins who were lawyers. "Friedman and Friedman were their names. I will never forget that," he recalls. "I told your Grandma to put on some nice clothes and we went to talk to them. And they told me 'You don't have to worry from now on' and they arranged everything for us. I will never forget that.
