My fingers pinched the topaz on the chain as I stared at it in the mirror. I decided to take it with me, but I never removed it from my neck the day before. I had slept with it and woken up with it, and when it finally came time, I was having trouble convincing myself to take it off. Why did I have to torture myself with a reminder of Hikaru? I wasn’t sure. Maybe it was supposed to be like a promise that one day I would return to him. I couldn’t expect him to wait for me, though. In fact, I was happier pretending that he would immediately forget about me. That meant I wouldn’t have made a huge impact on his life, which, in turn, showed he wouldn’t be hurt.

Was taking me away not enough? What was the point of having him marry Éclair? It almost had to be about him becoming the heir. There had to be a patriarch, and I had a feeling she was using the same leverage on him as she was on me. That was why she sent me to Ouran in the first place! She needed me to find out if Tamaki cared for anyone enough to keep him from leaving and not wanting to get engaged! I had led Éclair right to him without even knowing!

I sat there, confused, “I don’t understand.”

He told me, “There’s no reason for you to go to France! You grandmother doesn’t know anything about you wanting to break your engagement, and your mother isn’t in danger!
