Highwood Pumpkin Festival Case Study

Paulette Lopez Duffe was expecting a cold, grey, and damp October weekend, instead she found sunshine and a pleasant breeze at last week’s 6th Annual Great Highwood Pumpkin Festival. Duffe and her family had just moved to Highwood last fall when the festival occurred on a dreary weekend, but the weather did not discourage them. “We were so curious to connect with the town we had just moved to, that we decided to get out and see the fest anyways,” Duffe said. “There were more people attending this year's event - getting their warm weather quota before the bitter cold makes us all indoor hermits.” Duffe was right. Over 75, 000 attendees, according to officials, ventured out to enjoy the warm weather and support the cause of autism awareness at the festival, located in downtown Highwood, Illinois. With the temperature reaching a high of 79 degrees during the day and sunshine forecasted for all of Saturday and Sunday, according to weather.com, it was unusually pleasant. …show more content…

To many, the end of October is a time of corn mazes, costume parties, and haunted houses. Many cultures celebrate harvest festivals during October, though none are as well-known as Halloween. Because Halloween is primarily descended from the Celtic festival of Samhain, when some think of Halloween, they think of bats and cats and witches. Because of the contemporary nature of Halloween, without Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Sylvia Plath’s “Lady Lazarus”, and George A. Romero’s Night Of The Living Dead, the holiday as we…

One of the great things about technology is that it saves more lives then we will ever know. Many lives took tolls before technology because we couldn’t sense anything like we do now. We can now see where storms will hit before they’re even a week old and we can announce the news so anybody in danger can seek shelter elsewhere out of the storm’s path. With the technology we have today, we could have prevented many people killed during the storm on Armistice Day. The loss of lives because of the blizzard that hit on Armistice Day back in 1940 could have been, in more ways than one, prevented based how advanced the technology was at the time.…

The wind is frigid. Campus bustles with life—faintly stiffened by the cold bite. It is just another wintery day at the University of Michigan: salted sidewalks, slush-covered surfaces, in all, a snowy scene. While the squirrels hibernate cozily in their dens, the geese gaggle about campus—Canadian geese, specifically. What started out as a coat made for arctic expeditions, Himalayan quests, and Yukon excursions, has now blossomed into one of winter’s biggest fashion trends.…

Halloween is the one day in the whole year where people and children alike dress up in costumes and go door to door in order to accumulate candy, however, one would not think that Halloween was not always a child-friendly holiday but had a shadowy and foggy past. Halloween then and Halloween now are completely two different people. Halloween in the past was first a day that marked a new season, but soon became a time where terror resides in the hearts of the Celts. Halloween today, has taken a dark turn where sadists and commercialization have sucked the fun and the historical truth out of Halloween.…
