When it comes to examining those who are successful, the idea of whether it is more important to be highly competitive or highly competent always comes to mind. The answer to this question however, is not all that difficult to understand. Competency and competitiveness are two qualitites that can be found in nearly all great leaders, but only one of these qualities is truly necessary to succeed. This quality is that of being highly competent.

Being highly competent means to have a well rounded, full understanding of a subject matter. Highly competent people are well informed about the situations that they are tasked with, which allows them to approach these situations systematically, analyzing each step along the way. Those that are highly competent are confident that they will succeed in whatever venture they set out to. Highly competent people understand their strengths and capabilities, and are not afraid to take on a difficult task, bcause they are well aware of what they are capable to accomplishing. Highly competitive people on the other hand, are not necessarily guaranteed to reach success. This type of people are typically not afraid to take on a task either, but often times get in over their heads due to not considering the skills necessary to succeed. An example of the highly competent person in competition with a highly competitive person can be demonstrated by observing a computer coding competition. The prize may be of such an extraordinary monetary value that the highly competitive person decides to give it a shot, but in reality this person does not stand a chance against someone who actually has the skill set to succeed in a competition such as this. The highly competent coder will win by a landslide, becasue once again, the highly competitive person has gotten in over their head. As mentioned earlier, it is great to be highly competitive, but this alone will not help one to
