Highlands Housing Contract When you think about college dorm rooms, you immediately think of traditional style rooms with standard twin size beds. The rooms are small and you barely have closet space. Also, there is no air conditioning either. There are the dreadful community bathrooms that everyone on the floor has to share. It’s not a pleasant and comforting place to live. Edinboro University however, built eight Highlands dorms, each with four floors, that are very comparable to hotels. The Highlands offer various styles of rooms to choose from such as, studios, semi suites, and suites. The student can have their own bedroom, or share a bedroom, and share a living room, kitchen, and bathroom. They even have full size beds in most of the

When the students date quickly approaches, they must log onto Edinboro’s website to choose the room type they prefer. This must be a quick process so that the room type the student wants, doesn’t become filled up and unavailable. As the student quickly selects their Highlands room and roommates (if they wish to preselect roommates) they come across a “Terms and Conditions Agreement.” Skipping over the long paragraph with tiny print (like people generally do in all cases of “Terms and Conditions Agreements”) the student checks the “I Agree” box. Little did that student know, they just agreed to a two year housing contract that they are “legally binded” to. The housing contract states, “All single, full-time, freshmen students under the age of 21 who do not commute from the home of a parent are required to live in campus housing for two consecutive years (excluding summer sessions).” Edinboro University says this contract is valid because they “strongly believe in the academic advantage offered to students who reside in the residence halls. Students who live on campus, as opposed to off campus or commuting form home, tend to have higher grade point averages, tend to graduate in a more timely fashion and report a higher satisfaction with their overall living …show more content…
For example, the walls in the Highlands are practically paper thin. If you have loud roommates, like I do, who like to stay up late to socialize, then you are getting deprived of sleep from their noisiness. This actually gives you an academic disadvantage because then you aren’t fully attentive for your 8:00 am class. I also disagree with the statement that “Students who live on campus tend to have a high grade point average.” If I have a big test coming up, I go home to study. The comfort of my own home eases my worries. I tend to focus more on my schoolwork and have less distractions. I do better on the tests I study for at home, than when I study in my noisy dorm room.
Another argument I have is the cost of the dorms. Depending on the style room you choose, the cost can vary from $3,315-$4,155 per semester. That equals $6,630-$8,310 each year. For some students, like myself, living at Edinboro University costs more than my tuition towards getting an education. I would go to college for half the price if I commuted from
