• Tyson (2010) mentions although “the parts are important. They are just not the goal” (p. 118). I could not agree more. There is too much emphasis on facts and mastery of disjointed skills created by high-stakes testing. Students are rarely given the opportunity to the “big picture” of how all these smaller parts are meaningful to topic being studied.
• Mabry’s mission statement: “Maximize student achievement in a culture of caring” is simply the best mission statement I have ever heard in all my years of teaching (Tyson, 2010, p. 120). So impressive, I plan to share the statement with my principal.
