High school is a staple of American culture. Popular culture is littered with high school imagery: cheerleaders at the homecoming game, senior prom, and finally, graduation. It is a major time of growth for adolescents and serves as a stepping stone into the adult world, giving students the skills and experiences needed to be successful later in life. However our perception of high school and the ‘high school experience’ is rapidly changing as alternatives to traditional schooling appear. An excellent example of this is an emerging program commonly referred to as ‘early college high school’, a duel enrollment program that allows high school students to receive an associate’s degree while earning their high school diploma.…

In this fall semester of college what I’ve learned in Ms. Balderas class is knowing how to properly write a college written essay. I know after taking this course that I can somewhat write a well written essay that is college appropriate. In high school I was taught to write essay that were good enough for the teachers, but now that I’m in college I feel the need that I need to write better and show my instructor that I do know what I am writing about. I’ve learned so many ways to write a paper, but some of my essays aren’t there yet, I feel as if I haven’t gotten to the point where I’ve learned to write a paper that is good, but I know within time I’ll get there.…

The writing expected from college courses is one that most are unfamiliar with. Although students learn basic English skills throughout grade school and up to high school, most of the advanced steps are forgotten by the time the student is to enter college. Paired with this, are the nontraditional students, who haven’t studied advanced academic language for long periods of time. Professors are expecting students of all kinds of study to have a high academic vocabulary and high writing skill. Often times a gap in remedial writing courses within the first semester or so.…

In my high school writing was a little different than others. While most were in normal 9th and 10th grade English, I was in Read 180 and Century 21, which both of these classes aim more towards making us better readers not writers. Before my junior year my school changed things up a bit and made juniors and seniors picked what kind of English class they were interested in. In read180 once a week we had to read an article from the newspaper or a quote the teacher posted on the board; for the newspaper we had to write a six sentence paragraph of what it was about; the quote we had to say what it meant and why we think that or connect with it.…

Before I start taking classes at Texas A&M University- Commerce, my writing level was at a high school level. Basically, I was taught the fundamental basic of writing and the writing process (analyzing the prompt, brainstorming, rough draft- revising and editing, and final draft) using a five-paragraph format (having an introduction, three point body paragraphs, and a conclusion). I use this process throughout of high school, and up till now in college. When I got to my senior year (12th grade), not only the writing I did was similar to college writing, but the class itself has the feeling of a college class. My 12th grade English class teacher introduces the class to Purdue OWL.…

If you were to ask me about my high school writing experience, I would tell you that I did not have much experience. We did not have any classes at my school that were specifically writing classes. At my high school, we just had regular English classes where we would occasionally do a few papers in. My English teacher senior year was a great person, but did not necessarily teach us a lot about proper styles of writing papers. Coming into college English, I did not feel well prepared with what to expect for a college level writing class.…
