My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. After attending karate for 11 years, I have taken a weekly position teaching. Though sometimes I teach adults, I usually teach children, and while they have a difficult time focusing for any long period of time, the joy and satisfaction of seeing them succeed and pass tests is wonderful. I began tutoring when a young girl had struggled to pass belt test after multiple tries, so after talking to her and her parents we arranged a weekly schedule to focus on her largest obstacles. With just 4 sessions together she was able to pass the rank exam without any difficulties.…
Then, we would provide a SHS tutor that would plan out a schedule to meet the student at school. They would work on homework or double-check a student’s project/presentation. Having a consistent SHS tutor would build students’ confidence in Spanish while alleviating a busy teacher. The SHS tutors would also have to be properly screened to ensure the member knows the material and does not blatantly complete a student’s work for them. Shadowing a physician provided me with direct exposure to medicine, allowing me to engage with patients and interact with physicians. I obtained insight from physicians about their experiences and specialties. I also had the opportunity to listen to patients’ stories and concerns. I learned that medicine is not merely about applying medical knowledge to treat others, but also about the quality of interaction that physicians forge with their patients. Before I was in NHS, I tutored and volunteered anyways, so it was nothing new to me, but it's cool to track my hours to see how much time I really do put into my school and community. Tutoring through NHS has help connect me to more students in my school that need tutoring. An experience that displayed my ability to mentor was during my time helping out at Columbus Elementary School. There was one boy named Presley and he had trouble focusing, so I often ended up at his table trying to draw his attention away from his peers and towards his work. Collaborative Learning is a Solution for Binge Drinking By Jumana Edor Kenneth Bruffee argues that collaborative learning is a worldwide solution to social difficulties at colleges and that it is a solution to binge drinking. He believes that freshman college students often join sororities and fraternities to “make friends” and to “fit in” also that they would be willing to do anything. I strongly agree with Bruffee, if colleges created peer tutoring, team projects, or just had students sit together and work in groups it would decrease binge drinking and the number of students who join Greek sororities and fraternities because they would be making friends through better situations. The article that I chose to read was, The Effects of After-School Tutoring on an Individual ELS Student, written by Amanda Donahue (2002). The purpose of the action research project was to see if by participating in an After-School class with the teacher, the student would stay in school and inspire them to make progress in school.
