High School Tutoring Experience

Improved Essays
I have a year tutoring experience in an elementary, high school, and college level classrooms. I worked directly with students one-on-one to ensure they have a strong foundation on the material. These were the students that needed either clarifications or actual lessons. Therefore, I worked with these students during my lunch and after school to make sure they understand the material.

My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…

After attending karate for 11 years, I have taken a weekly position teaching. Though sometimes I teach adults, I usually teach children, and while they have a difficult time focusing for any long period of time, the joy and satisfaction of seeing them succeed and pass tests is wonderful. I began tutoring when a young girl had struggled to pass belt test after multiple tries, so after talking to her and her parents we arranged a weekly schedule to focus on her largest obstacles. With just 4 sessions together she was able to pass the rank exam without any difficulties.…

Then, we would provide a SHS tutor that would plan out a schedule to meet the student at school. They would work on homework or double-check a student’s project/presentation. Having a consistent SHS tutor would build students’ confidence in Spanish while alleviating a busy teacher. The SHS tutors would also have to be properly screened to ensure the member knows the material and does not blatantly complete a student’s work for them. SHS tutors would also encourage students to continue taking higher-level classes, such as Spanish 3 or 4, by sharing their positive personal experiences.…

Shadowing a physician provided me with direct exposure to medicine, allowing me to engage with patients and interact with physicians. I obtained insight from physicians about their experiences and specialties. I also had the opportunity to listen to patients’ stories and concerns. I learned that medicine is not merely about applying medical knowledge to treat others, but also about the quality of interaction that physicians forge with their patients. Furthermore, this experience helped me explore the daily lives of physicians and the challenges they face.…

Before I was in NHS, I tutored and volunteered anyways, so it was nothing new to me, but it's cool to track my hours to see how much time I really do put into my school and community. Tutoring through NHS has help connect me to more students in my school that need tutoring. I can recall the specific event that made me love tutoring and taught me the value of donating my time to help people. I was walking down the main hallway at the end of school, rushing to get out as was everyone else, and I felt a tap on my shoulder. It was a student I had been tutoring for about a month.…

Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC) has guided me, a 49 year-old college sophomore, to utilize my academic grit in order to mentor other students, and past experiences to succeed in my educational and career goal as a visual healing artist. My 25 years of medical experience are rooted in my professional goal to be a visual healing artist. Mentors of my previous medical profession ranged from surgeons, doctors, and firemen to patients and their families, all of which helped me learn about human anatomy, kinesiology, and compassion for humanity. My medical career started over 25 years ago as an administrative assistant. I worked my way up the medical professional chain from my emergency medical technician (EMT) certification, registered dental assistant, x-ray technician, surgical technician, medical administrator of insurance billing and surgery scheduling, to an insurance agent of life and health, disability and long term care.…

An experience that displayed my ability to mentor was during my time helping out at Columbus Elementary School. There was one boy named Presley and he had trouble focusing, so I often ended up at his table trying to draw his attention away from his peers and towards his work. He was struggling with math, subtraction specifically and heavily relied on finger counting to do any problem. After about two weeks doing number lines and tally marks, he greatly improved and no longer needed any help for simpler subtraction.…

    Binge Drinking Argument

Collaborative Learning is a Solution for Binge Drinking By Jumana Edor Kenneth Bruffee argues that collaborative learning is a worldwide solution to social difficulties at colleges and that it is a solution to binge drinking. He believes that freshman college students often join sororities and fraternities to “make friends” and to “fit in” also that they would be willing to do anything. I strongly agree with Bruffee, if colleges created peer tutoring, team projects, or just had students sit together and work in groups it would decrease binge drinking and the number of students who join Greek sororities and fraternities because they would be making friends through better situations. Colleges should create group work because it will decrease the number of students joining those types of institutions because I myself went through something…

The article that I chose to read was, The Effects of After-School Tutoring on an Individual ELS Student, written by Amanda Donahue (2002). The purpose of the action research project was to see if by participating in an After-School class with the teacher, the student would stay in school and inspire them to make progress in school. Since motivation is one of the main reasons ELLs drop from school, Ms, Donahue wanted to see if they had motivation and praise the students would increase their grades and performance, and essentially graduate from High School. I chose this article because it felt close to the issue that I am exploring in my action research project, the motivation for Long Term English students and see if I could implement it as…
