The New Jersey Chamber Singers and the Bridgewater-Raritan High School Symphonic Choir performed a choral concert, Psalms from Age to Age, located at The Presbyterian Church of Toms River. This performance by both of these choirs was impressive, as well as organized due to the talent and easy flow between each song. This performance was in a beautiful church with stained glass windows; the windows provided a sense of colorful light inside of the church, which I loved. The inside of the church was a great temperature and the seating was comfortable. The church is old; therefore, the seating is also old, but there were cushions on the pews, making it relaxing. Also, the majority of the audience was older men and women. Overall, there was a decent amount of people in the audience, yet it was not too crowded and everyone in the audience was very polite. Psalms from Age to Age was performed by two different chorale groups; the New Jersey Chamber Singers, featuring the Bridgewater-Raritan High School Symphonic Choir. The New Jersey Chamber Singers is a small vocal chamber ensemble of the Jersey Shore, founded in 1978. It is under the direction of Reid Masters, who attended Westminster Choir College, leaving with a Bachelor in Music and a Master of Music degree in Sacred Music. This is a homophonic chorale work that has a timbre featuring a piano and all four vocal parts- soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. It was performed by both the Chamber Singers and the high school symphonic choir. This piece has a conjunct melody and a consonant harmony. There are many crescendos and decrescendos, it includes legato notes, and the meter is quadruple. Additionally, the tonality is major, the tempo is adagio, and the dynamics are piano. “Lass dich nur nichts nicht dauren” made me feel relaxed and happy since it was a mellow

My first memory at North Carolina Governor’s School West is of crying next to my parents on a bench under a giant tree. It was move-in day for the five-and-a-half-week session, and I was already sure that they would be the worst weeks of my life. I was terrified; I knew no one except two students from my high school, who were rising juniors and to whom I had never spoken before. After that stressful first day, I fell asleep unsure of how I could make it on my own in a place filled with such talented, intelligent, and unfamiliar people. A week later, I knew that Governor’s School would be one of the most treasured experiences of my entire life.…

Plato, a famous Greek Philosopher once said, “I would teach children music, physics and philosophy; but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning.” As a society, we thrive off the arts, most specifically music. No one can honestly say they have gone a few hours without thinking about, humming, whistling, singing, or even playing a song. Yes, drumming your pencil or pen against anything counts. Why would society deny their children the amazing opportunity to learn something this special?…

This past Wednesday, Soul Voices, directed by Jazz Studies assistant professor Pete Malinverni held their Spring concert in the Recital Hall of the Music Building. As I walked into the hall, I was surprised by its size and beauty. I had only previously been in the choral hall directly across, and so it was certainly not what I was expecting. From the top of the raked audience, you could see a stage at floor level, framed by two short lighting trees, and dotted with choir risers.…

Todays society is surrounded by music in many different facets. The exposure comes from the growth and dependence on technology, which allows the movement of noise to any location. People take music with them in the car, to the gym, over the speaker systems of most public venues, and even in the shower. This knowledge and understanding of music is a skill that needs to be enriched in the children of today. Music opens doors and opportunities for students that don’t want to be apart of the football team or didn’t make the cheer squad.…

Each song was played by a different small group, sizes were anywhere from trios and quartets to all of the performers for the ending piece.
