Me Talk Pretty One Day Essay

My greatest challenge with high school was surviving freshman year Spanish class. Just like David’s educational experience from, “Me Talk Pretty One Day”, I suffered from dealing with a difficult language teacher who overall made me into a better student. It was already tough trying to learn a new language but my teacher Mr. Farnelli made it even worst. Mr. Farnelli was an old Italian man who spoke about six or seven different languages. His accent was thick as can be, and it made it harder to understand anything he was saying. Coming to high school I was anxious, and I was very excited to be learned a language that wasn’t my own. Being in a class full of honor students there was a little discomfort for me, because I wasn’t use to being in an advanced class. The whole thing was a new …show more content…
First quarter went smooth got good grades to start off, and it felt good to be learning something new. Even though I had good grades in his class, learning in the class became a hard thing to do. In, “Me Talk Pretty One Day”, David Sedaris says, “I’m not completely in the dark yet I understand only half of what this woman was saying” (Sedaris 286). I felt the same with my Spanish teacher, could barely understand anything my teacher was saying. I would be lost in class, staying up all times of the night to trying to learn how to learn this language on my own. This was a very difficult thing for me because trying to read Spanish without out speaking it, is just a waste of time. There would be times when I just sit there and stir at the textbook just hoping I would be able to comprehend what was on the page. As the year progressed I fell short, started to failed a couple of test that had set me back grade wise. Worked began to get harder, and the fact that I was teaching myself didn’t help my situation either. After a few horrible test grades, I say that it was time to make a change in my approach to

David Sedaris' essay "Me Talk Pretty One Day" gives a look into the struggles of a man attending a French class, in France, in his early forties. Well past the "normal" age of a student. It is a well written account about the ups and downs associated with learning a new language, especially in a foreign land. Even though the essay is written about a man taking a class, the lessons learned from it can be applied to anyone who is thinking about go after their goals. No matter what stage of life you are in.…

It was too boring at the time. But now I can see why my parents always pushed for me to learn Spanish. It allowed me to be much more culturally “sensitive” in a very culturally diverse world. I guess the moral of this story was that if I took up the many opportunities that were present to me when I was young. I would be able to speak to all of my relatives and breeze through those pesky Spanish…

When I was in six grade, my PE coach made it clear to me that I wasn't alone, and I could accomplish anything I put the time and effort into. He was the football coach for Atascocita middle school. An African American in his late 20s, very friendly, and Guidable when it came to his students. On the first day of school as a new student with no knowledge of the language, I was extremely terrified to transform from speaking different language, and having a similar set of friends into an inexperienced world and dissimilar students who I had absolutely nothing in common with. Fortunately, I had my brother as a personal translator throughout the year.…

Even being an American has it’s problems. Especially coming from a Hispanic background. I was born in South Carolina, when I was five years old barely starting Kindergarten, my parents decided a big change for my brothers and I. We moved to Mexico, we lived there for about three years I started school there, so I never really had the chance on learning English. After I started going to school in Mexico, my parents decided to come back to South Carolina. That’s when everything was confusing, I didn’t speak any English which was very terrifying to me.…

I debated whether I would dub Plant Nanny as my favorite app, but after a long, hard debate with myself, I came to the conclusion that it was in fact Duolingo. Yes, Plant Nanny has been downloaded over 1,000,000 times, but perhaps that’s because it’s easy to lose motivation when it comes to self-improvement, and so people naturally download and delete the app within a few days, only to redownload it when they are looking for a health kick and then delete it again. However, I definitely did appreciate the cute little plant that lived in my phone. For the first time in my life, I felt like a mother. Watching that little sprout grow and develop its own personality filled me with pride.…

Reading, "Me Talk Pretty One Day", by David Sedaris, is like being at a stand-up comedy show. The article is full of puns and points that make you feel as though you are suffering through this French class with him. Despite all the humor in it, there are some main points I believe he is trying to convey. David Sedaris' main claim of perseverance is well argued, because the author never gives up in spite of a teacher who is rough with him, he spends extra time on his school work while immersing himself in the culture, and the author comes to realize he is not alone in his struggles. First, don't quit.…

Spanish 2 with Sra. Fernandez; it was something in which I absolutely despised. Every single A day, I would walk into the second block with a fear of something new. Whether it was fear of being called out in front of my class for not doing my work, or fear of getting another call home for being absent, I wanted nothing to do with that class. Finally, one day towards the end of the first semester, I decided I could not walk into school every other day feeling like this anymore.…

I was afraid when having an english class in college, the professor would point me out or give negative comments about my writing.…
