The content and execution of the first faculty meeting sets the tone for the entire school year. Facilitating faculty meetings, from determining the topics to delegating responsibilities, defines the principal’s role. In addition, this all important first meeting is when the principal explains priorities and establishes expectations. There were a couple of teachers who made less than positive comments along with excuses for their EOG math data. It impressed me how Mr. Steagall handled the negative attitudes; he did not feed into the negativism but kept turning back to the data. Furthermore, he discussed the daily instructional schedule which includes additional time for math instruction. To keep the meeting moving forward, he offered to meet with the teachers individually at a later time.
In thinking about leading my first beginning of the year faculty meeting, I want to place an emphasis on collaboration and teamwork. In order to spend more time forming relationships with and among the staff, I may be bold and consider using a flipped faculty meeting approach.
