High school athletes are prone to experience an injury during their participation of either a contact or non contact sport. An injury is defined as a, “harm or damage : an act or event that causes someone or something to no longer be fully healthy or in good condition” (Merriam Webster). A concussion is defined as, “a stunning, damaging, or shattering effect from a hard blow; especially : a jarring injury of the brain resulting in disturbance of cerebral function” (Merriam Webster). Knowing what a concussion is shows the severity of the injury, and unfortunately a lot of concussions do occur in football. Athletes who are in bigger in size and do not hydrate properly when in hot conditions are most prone. The seriousness of this illness is shown by its death count since 1975, “31 high school football players have died from heat stroke” (Gilchrist 1012). Football players are typically large in size due to their need to carry out efficient procedure and the large size is an advantage. They need to hydrate themselves and be aware that playing in hot conditions can cause to have severe heat illness.
