High School Sports Argumentative Essay

“There is a long list of proven leaders that can attribute part of their development to sports like Jeffrey Immelt, Meg Whitman, and even President George H. W. Bush.” (Kai Sato, From the Case of High School Sports). Without the availability of high school sports could these leaders have gotten to where they are now if sports were not part of their development? High school sports are worth the time and money that schools spend on them because they change people for the better and allow people to become more successful. The benefits for high school sports include gaining important character traits such as perseverance, provides disadvantaged students to participate in sports, and presents potential future job opportunities. If schools eliminated high school sports, many children would be unable to participate in club organizations. “In an overview of the research on non school based after school programs, Gardner, Roth and Brooks-Gunn find that disadvantaged children participate in these programs at significantly lower rates. They find that low income students have less access due to challenges with regard to transportation, non-nominal fees and off-campus safety. Therefore, reducing or eliminating these opportunities would most likely deprived disadvantaged students of the benefits from athletic participation” (Daniel Bowen and Collin Hitt - High School sports aren't killing Academics). This passage sums up why high school sports are needed along with club sports. If high school sports were eliminated, some lower class citizens wouldn't be able to reap the benefits that you gain from them. A lower income student that participates in high school sports will be able to catch the eye of more people that are looking to hire, and could land them a job so that they can provide for their family in a better way than
