Unity is a rarity in high schools, and with the addition of sports, there is even greater division as some individuals place themselves “in a separate, untouchable category” (Source 3). Sports have been great fuel to the already existing fire of cliques and exclusion of many types. These extracurriculars have helped to damage what is the already broken schooling system. And while some aspects of sports can be beneficial to a student, they can also be very harmful in an extreme dosage.…
In her article, “The Case Against High School Sports,” Amanda Ripley argues that sports should not be connected to high schools in America. In her argument, Ripley argues that sports lack economic efficiency, increase violence and lower learning levels in American high schools. While Ripley’s argument is well researched and explained, her argument ignores several key factors that also influence American high school sports. Firstly, Ripley compares the American attitude on sports with that of other countries.…
For some time, schools have been debating whether they should get rid of sports to help students improve their education. Many studies have found that schools that provide after school athletics are shown to have a lower academic rate. Therefore, school sports should be cut off because they are a distraction from school work, cost a great deal of money, and cause fatigue. Many student athletes know that their extra-curricular sports may take away from their education.…

High school sport synthesis The position I stand with when it comes to supporting sports or not in SUHSD is that I think that we should support sports. The source that led me to believe that sports are good towards academics is Daniel H. Bowen and Collin Hitt’s article High-School Sports Aren’t Killing Academics. They state that there's evidence that sports provide success in academics rather than just focusing on sports with lower grades. As for Amanda Ripley’s text The Case Against High School Sports is against having high school sports and says that our academics are not comparable to places like South Korea and Finland.…
After school sports are taking away several kids opportunities for their future. Although a lot of people think after school sports are great for students education and physical health; many studies have shown that after curriculum sports will distract them from their school work. Therefore, schools should get rid of after school sports because campuses will save money, kids would not be distracted and students will get higher grades. Many schools are spending so much money for after-curricular sports, when they could be spending this money on academics. According to an article by Amanda Ripley; she interviewed Ernest Singleton of Premont Independent School district who said that “he realized they could save 150,000 dollars when getting rid of after-school sports’’(10).…

Many high schools value the beneficial lesson sports provide however, there is controversy over whether or not high school sports are proven to be advantageous, or hurtful. A basketball team in Texas was down by two points with seconds left. After two steals and a half-court buzzer beater, they win the game. However there is more to high school sports than the intense playoff games. High school sports do more for students’ than give them a varsity letter. High school sports are beneficial to a students’ education in that they teach time management, develop social skills, and improve a students’ grades.…
Should middle and high school students have to meet a grade requirement to participate in sports? On my opinion, I think students from middle and high school should have to meet a grade requirement to participate in sports. I agree to this term because middle and high school students should maintain a certain grade point average to play a sport. I do believe that middle and high school students should have to meet a grade requirement to be able to participate in a sports team. For example, imagine yourself as an athlete who has just graduated high school.…

“Sports...is seriously underestimated by educators, who see sports as competing with academic development rather than a route to it.” As I described, in my experience sports in my school did compete with academic development as did a variety of other social factors. I would suggest that if sports are to be a part of a well rounded education, then athletics should be optional to all students, not just the select few. It is no wonder introductory education would be socially divided, and students marginalized when at its core, the structure is flawed. Graff asserts that “the sports world was more compelling than school because it was more intellectual than school, not less.”…
Around the world many would say that American sports are taken much more serious and are much more involved than other countries. Some critics argue that the superiority of sports in America conflict with other issues such as in “The Case Against High School Sports” by Amanda Ripley. She makes a bold statement arguing that high school sport students become negligent in education within the American society. However, there is no correlation between low test scores and participation in sports in America; after school activities such as sports keep students out of trouble, and being involved in sports teaches students the lesson of balancing major conflicting events. Amanda Ripley argues that sports in America is why education in the United States has lower test scores than other countries such as South Korea and Finland.…

At first glance many people think that sports are too time consuming. Many experts have done studies that show the positive impacts sports have on children. Sport participation in school does not worsen academic results despite taking time away from class (Maximizing the Benefits of Youth Sport). Athletes know that they don’t have as much time to do schoolwork, which makes them more motivated to use their time for school. Students that aren’t athletes don’t use their free time for school which makes them less likely to do quality schoolwork.…
What is more important, funding the arts or sports? This is a tough choice that is very common in schools throughout the U.S. Most school boards would look at this question and quickly give the answer of, “Sports are more important because the majority of the school likes going to games and supporting the athletes. Art class is just a place for students to doodle, and most of them just take that class because they don’t have anything else to do.” Even though not every student enjoy playing basketball or going to games, sports are still beneficial to have in schools and keep funded.…
