The sampling frame for the comparison group was selected from data for all Women in the state who matched a participant for demographic information on their birth certificate such as the date of birth of the Mother, the date of birth for the child and the race and ethnicity. They also could not live in the two different zip codes that constituted the attendance zone for the participating High school. Another nonprobability technique used in this study was the snowball method, several of the program participants were referred by school/faculty, and staff. Therefore, it had a lower sampling size and the population sample was not generalizable and inclusive since it was primarily based on one school, and one demographic.
Measurement:
The independent variable in this study is the adolescent mothers who actively participated in the intervention. A measurement strategy that appeared to indicate cultural competence is that it included a sensitive and accessible setting for the weekly group meetings to occur. Many of the participants currently attended the school, therefore it eliminated the fear of being at an inaccessible location in a unfamiliar environment. It also employed local community member such as the faculty and staff at the school to participate and help facilitate the peer group sessions. By doing so it provided the participants with a sense of familiarity within the study. The incorporation of the Social Worker was an additional benefit to participants since it could provide support and services for external issues that the participants may have
